Early farming began in the Near East about 10,500 years ago. Farming first reached the Balkans in Europe some 8 to 9,000 years ago, and then crept westward. Locals in Britain, seperated from the mainland by the relatively newly formed English Channel, did not start farming until about 6,000 years ago. But an analysis of sediment from a submerged British archaeological site called Bouldner Cliff found something unexpected. "Amongst our Bouldner Cliff samples we found ancient DNA evidence of wheat at the site, which was not seen in mainland Britain for another 2,000 years." Robin Allaby of the University of Warwick. "However, wheat was already being grown in southern Europe. This is incredibly exciting because it means Bouldner's inhabitants were not as isolated as previously thought. In fact, they were in touch, one way or another, with more advanced Neolithic farming communities in southern Europe."

Printed "adumbrated", the speaker says "seperated"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "seperated from the mainland". The printed word "adumbrated" is on the page. The first letters are different, so listen to the very start of the word to catch the change.

Printed "spectated", the speaker says "mainland"

Explanation: Listen again to "from the mainland". The page shows "spectated" instead. The two words start with different letters, so listen at the start of the word.

Printed "slothfulness", the speaker says "analysis"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "an analysis of sediment". The printed word is "slothfulness" instead. The printed word makes no sense there, so focus on the meaning as you listen.

Printed "reconquer", the speaker says "Bouldner"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "called Bouldner Cliff". The printed word is "reconquer" on the page. The first letters differ, so pay attention to the start of the name to decide.

Printed "partially", the speaker says "University"

Explanation: The speaker says "University of Warwick", not "partially". The two words begin with different letters, so listen to the first sound to tell which fits.

Printed "respiring", the speaker says "exciting"

Explanation: Listen for "incredibly exciting because". The printed word shows "respiring" instead. Both words end the same way, so wait for the whole word before you decide.

Printed "expediently", the speaker says "previously"

Explanation: You will hear "previously thought". The page has "expediently" there. The first letters are different, so listen to the start of the word to spot the difference.

"wheat" matches the audio

Explanation: "we found ancient DNA evidence of wheat at" may look strange, but it matches the audio exactly. Do not click it, the speaker really says "wheat".

"Bouldner" matches the audio

Explanation: "our Bouldner Cliff samples" looks like a rare name, so it can trick you. The speaker does say "Bouldner" exactly, so do not click it.
