It's similar to a pregnancy test: a drop of liquid on a strip of paper causes an easily seen color change. But imagine that kind of simple, cheap technology employed in testing for pollution or health issues, anywhere and on the cheap. Researchers at Colorado State University describe such a system in the journal Lab On A Chip. Other paper tests may give only slight color differences, and some rely on expensive equipment to read the results. For the new technology, the research team designed a system that creates a dramatic color change on the paper. The user drops liquid to be analyzed at the bottom of the paper. As capillary action pulls the liquid up, substances in the paper react, causing the color change. So far, three tests exist for the system. One looks for nickel, which can be an environmental pollutant. The other two are for glutathione, a health marker, and glucose, for diabetics. In trials, the paper tests competed with conventional methods at measuring concentrations. The university is now spinning off a company to develop the technology. If successful, it could bring cheap, easy analysis to scientists—and citizens—around the world.

Printed "choreography", the speaker says "technology"

Explanation: You will hear "simple, cheap technology employed". On the page it shows "choreography" instead. They start with different letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "diminution", the speaker says "pollution"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "testing for pollution or". The printed word "diminution" appears in the text. Both end the same, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "quadrophonic", the speaker says "dramatic"

Explanation: Listen again to "creates a dramatic color". You see "quadrophonic" in the transcript. First letters are different, so wait for the full word.

Printed "whispering", the speaker says "measuring"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "at measuring concentrations". The printed word "whispering" is shown on the page. Both end the same, so listen from the first letter.

Printed "galaxy", the speaker says "university"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "the university is now". The word "galaxy" appears in the transcript. The words begin with different letters, so hear the whole word.

Printed "apparatuses", the speaker says "analysis"

Explanation: The speaker says "bring cheap, easy analysis to", not "apparatuses". On the page it shows "apparatuses".

"Lab" matches the audio

Explanation: "in the journal Lab On A Chip" looks short and odd, but the speaker says it exactly. Do not click it.

"glutathione" matches the audio

Explanation: "The other two are for glutathione, a health" is a long, rare word that may seem wrong. It is spoken exactly, so do not click it.
