Classical music competitions pit performers against each other. Obviously, the most important criterion for judges is sound. But that assumption needs a new...hearing. Because a player's passion may be the best predictor of victory. In a new study, nearly 200 novices had to choose the winners of 10 classical music competitions. Some heard a music clip of the top three performances. Others saw a video with sound. Still others watched a silent video. And the participants were more likely to choose the winner if they watched the silent video, in all 10 of the competitions. Then professional musicians gave it a try. These judges also only reliably selected the winners from the silent video. Musicians selected the winner more frequently even when all they saw was an outline of the motion of the performers. The researchers say the findings show that novices and experts make quick judgments about musical performances based on visual cues conveying involvement and passion.

Printed "disposers", the speaker says "performers"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "performers against each other". On the page it reads "disposers". The words start with different letters, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "gastronomical", the speaker says "classical"

Explanation: Listen again to "classical music competitions". You can see "gastronomical" printed there. The first letters differ, so wait for the whole word.

Printed "mizzenmasts", the speaker says "participants"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "participants were more likely". It shows "mizzenmasts" on the page. The words begin with different letters, so listen to the start.

Printed "inventions", the speaker says "musicians"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "professional musicians gave it". Printed text reads "inventions" instead. The first letters are not the same, so trust the spoken word.

Printed "believably", the speaker says "frequently"

Explanation: The speaker says "more frequently even when" not "believably". On the page it says "believably". Both words end the same, so listen to the whole word meaning.

Printed "duchess", the speaker says "judgments"

Explanation: Listen for "quick judgments about musical". On the page it reads "duchess". The words end differently, so the ending will tell you which to click.

Printed "corpuses", the speaker says "performances"

Explanation: You will hear "musical performances based on". Printed there is the word "corpuses". It makes no sense before "based", so click it.

"sound" matches the audio

Explanation: "a video with sound." has a common word that looks like a trick. It is exactly what the speaker says, so do not click it.

"silent" matches the audio

Explanation: "watched a silent video." may catch your eye as changed, but it matches the audio. Do not click it.
