Once upon a time, our atmosphere was a little thin on oxygen. Like, there wasn't any. Then, about three billion years ago, a handful of bacteria figured out how to harvest the energy from sunlight to make themselves some food. In the process, they consumed carbon dioxide, and gave off oxygen. So the air filled with oxygen, and all was right with the world. If you've ever taken an intro biology course, you've no doubt heard the tale. Photosynthetic bacteria are the heroes who brought oxygen to our planet. But maybe there's more to the story than that. Because in the online issue of Nature Geoscience, researchers from Australia say: the bacteria didn't act alone. The scientists looked at atmosphere oxygen levels throughout Earth's history. And they found that the amount of oxygen in the air spiked each time smaller land masses collided to form a supercontinent, like Pangea. These massive pile-ups generated mountain chains, and as the mountains eroded, they released nutrients into the oceans, feeding the photosynthetic bacteria. So the young Earth and its inhabitants worked together.

Printed "junketeer", the speaker says "atmosphere"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "our atmosphere was a". It starts with a different letter, so listen to the start of the word.

Printed "widener", the speaker says "bacteria"

Explanation: The speaker says "a handful of bacteria figured", not "widener". They begin with another letter, so focus on the first sound.

Printed "sulfide", the speaker says "sunlight"

Explanation: Listen for "energy from sunlight to". Both words start with the same letter, so wait for the middle or end of the word.

Printed "inhaler", the speaker says "Australia"

Explanation: You will hear "researchers from Australia say". Focus on the start of the country name.

Printed "hypoglycaemics", the speaker says "scientists"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "The scientists looked at". The printed word "hypoglycaemics" is much longer on the page, so follow the shorter spoken word.

Printed "geodetic", the speaker says "atmosphere"

Explanation: Listen again to "atmosphere oxygen levels throughout". It starts with a different letter, so listen to the beginning of the phrase.

Printed "dismember", the speaker says "together"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "inhabitants worked together". They end the same, so listen to the start of the word.

"Photosynthetic" matches the audio

Explanation: "Photosynthetic bacteria are the heroes" is a long describing word that looks tricky. It is exactly what the speaker says, so do not click it.

"Pangea" matches the audio

Explanation: "a supercontinent, like Pangea" contains a rare name that may seem wrong. The speaker says it exactly, so leave it alone.
