It's an approach to pest control that's so crazy it just might work: convince the females that they're virgins. It would be useless as human birth control, of course, but the difference is that most female insects completely change their behavior after sex. For example, some mosquitoes suck blood. Others lose interest in males and start laying eggs. What's behind this dramatic change in behavior? Turns out it's a peptide in the males' seminal fluid. And now researchers in Vienna have found the females' receptor for this peptide. They report online in Nature that fruitflies without the receptor lay many fewer eggs and continue to be interested in sex. In other words, they act. So, back to pest control. Most female insects should have this sort of receptor, including the kinds that spread disease and devastate crops. If we could deactivate it on a large scale, instead of fighting egg-laying blood-suckers, we could live in peace with born-again virgins.

Printed "payer", the speaker says "behavior"

Explanation: In the audio you hear "change their behavior after". The printed word starts with a different letter, so listen to the whole word.

Printed "placebos", the speaker says "mosquitoes"

Explanation: Here the speaker says "some mosquitoes suck blood". The printed and spoken words start with different letters, so trust your ears.

Printed "anoxic", the speaker says "dramatic"

Explanation: The speaker says "behind this dramatic change". Both words end the same way, so listen to the start of the word to tell them apart.

Printed "nether", the speaker says "receptor"

Explanation: Listen for "found the females' receptor for". The printed and spoken words begin with different letters, so hear the full word before you click.

Printed "metabolites", the speaker says "fruitflies"

Explanation: You will hear "that fruitflies without the receptor". The two words end with the same letters, so focus on the start of the word when listening.

Printed "duding", the speaker says "including"

Explanation: On the recording the words are "including the kinds that spread". The printed and spoken words do not start the same, so listen to the first sound carefully.

Printed "customizing", the speaker says "fighting"

Explanation: Listen again to "instead of fighting egg-laying". The spoken word is much shorter, so you can hear that it is not the long printed word.

"seminal" matches the audio

Explanation: "peptide in the males' seminal fluid" has a less common word. It looks tricky, but the speaker says it exactly as printed, so do not click it.

"Nature" matches the audio

Explanation: "report online in Nature that" contains a name you might think is wrong. The speaker actually says that name, so do not click it.
