The key part of journalism is to look at what power centres are claiming, what institutions of authority are disseminating that they want you to think and believe and scrutinise and investigate whether those claims are actually true, to point out the parts of what those claims are which are actually false or misleading or deceitful, and also to uncover what it is that they don't want you to know that is necessary to complete the picture of what they're actually telling you. And that too might seem really obvious, but in so many ways that is not the function that I think the largest institutions and the largest media outlets in Western democracies actually performed, because in order to perform that function, you need to have an adversarial relationship to the people who are in power. You need to take their statements and have as your instincts, not amplifying them or repeating them or giving them credibility or reflexively, but digging into what it is that they're saying to investigating whether or not it's true, to uncovering what it is they're trying to hide, and to making clear when it is that they're lying. It's an adversarial relationship with institutions of power, if journalism is to be performed adequately and productively, and I think nobly; and the reason I say that is because if you look at how institutions of power conduct themselves, when they disseminate information about what it is that they're doing, or they may claim that they want you to think and believe.
