Listen to the recording and answer the question by selecting all the correct responses. You will need to select more than one response.
We've seen macro populations exploding as they move into the Icelandic waters. Catch has gone up about 70 fold over four years, but this has brought a whole lot of user conflict into the fishery and then more locally, we've seen one of our more. The stellar examples which I'll raise again in a minute is the invading urchins into Southeast Australia, sort of Tasmanian waters eating all the kelp which is home to a lot of things, including many recreationally important species. So, that's a few examples, but of course scientists have tried to look more broadly and more objectively. Is there global patterns? And this is 1 particular study that's done a very good job of that looking at all sorts of responses in biota, things that you might expect animals to do in response to climate change. And these are changes in their distribution phenology. Which is the change in the timing of the reproduction changes in abundance, community structure, calcification rates or other demographic rates like mortality and growth rates? Looked across a whole range of biota globally from a bunch of different studies and got about 1700 different responses and over 80% of them are consistent. The responses are consistent with what you'd expect. From a climate change, if climate change is the driver, one of the really important points that came out of this study was that the range of expansion in marine systems is about 10 times faster than you see in terrestrial systems. Part of the reason is because marine organisms tend to occupy the full range of their thermal habitat, which is not typically seen in terrestrial. System. So, when there is a change, it often necessitates a very rapid move.

Based on the audio, which two factors have been affected by the climate change-induced movement of marine organisms?

Option 1: "Increased catch in Icelandic waters"

Explanation: The text states that catch has increased about 70 fold over four years in Icelandic waters, which directly indicates that climate change has led to an increase in marine populations and subsequently, catch. This aligns with the main idea of the text regarding the impact of climate change on marine life.

Option 2: "Conflict in the fishery"

Explanation: While the text mentions user conflict in the fishery, it does not specify that this conflict is a direct factor affected by climate change-induced movement of marine organisms. Instead, it is a consequence of the increased catch, making this option incomplete and not directly supported by the text.

Option 3: "Invasion of urchins in Southeast Australia"

Explanation: The text provides a specific example of invading urchins in Southeast Australia, which are negatively impacting the kelp ecosystem. This invasion is a direct result of climate change affecting marine organisms, thus supporting this option as correct.

Option 4: "Changes in the distribution phenology"

Explanation: Although the text discusses changes in distribution phenology as a response to climate change, it does not indicate that this is a specific factor affected by the movement of marine organisms. Instead, it is a broader observation rather than a direct consequence, making this option incorrect.

Option 5: "Faster range expansion in marine systems compared to terrestrial systems"

Explanation: The text mentions that the range of expansion in marine systems is about 10 times faster than in terrestrial systems, but this is a comparative statement rather than a specific factor affected by the movement of marine organisms. It does not directly answer the question regarding the factors affected by climate change-induced movement, thus making this option incorrect.
