Now, I'm going to ask you this question. Why are you here That is to say, why should you, we, all of us, want to study these ancient Greeks I think it's reasonable for people who are considering the study of a particular subject in the college course to ask why they should. What is it about the ancient Greeks between the years that I mentioned to you that deserves the attention of people in the twenty-first century I think the answer is to be found, or at least one answer, the truth is there are many answers and some of them is it's just terribly interesting. But that's very much of a, what's the word I want, the opposite of objective, subjective observation by me. So, I would say a less subjective one is that I believe that it comes from their position, that is to say the position of the Greeks, at the most significant starting point of Western civilization, which is the culture that most powerfully shapes not only the West, but most of the world today. It seems to me to be evident that whatever its other characteristics, the West has created institutions of government and law that provide unprecedented freedom for its people. It's also invented a body of natural scientific knowledge and technological achievement that together make possible a level of health and material prosperity undreamed of in earlier times and unknown outside the West and those places that have been influenced by the West. I think the Nobel Prize laureate V.S. Naipaul, a man born in Trinidad of Indian parents, was right when he spoke of the modern world as our universal civilization shaped chiefly by the West.

Option 1: "The ancient Greeks were very influential in the Western world."

Explanation: The text states that the Greeks are at the 'most significant starting point of Western civilization,' indicating their profound influence on the Western world. This aligns with the main idea that their contributions shape modern society.

Option 2: "The ancient Greeks are very interesting."

Explanation: The lecturer mentions that studying the ancient Greeks is 'just terribly interesting,' which is a subjective observation. This reflects the personal appeal of their study, supporting the idea that interest is a valid reason for studying them.

Option 3: "The ancient Greeks provide for a subjective field of study."

Explanation: While the lecturer does mention a subjective observation, this option misrepresents the context. The focus is on the interest in studying them rather than framing it as a subjective field of study, which is too narrow and not explicitly stated.

Option 4: "The ancient Greeks created institutions of government and law."

Explanation: Although the text discusses the institutions of government and law created by the West, it does not specifically attribute this to the ancient Greeks. This option presents partial information, as it lacks the necessary context linking the Greeks directly to these achievements.

Option 5: "The ancient Greeks had good technological achievements."

Explanation: The text mentions 'natural scientific knowledge and technological achievement' as part of Western civilization but does not specifically credit the ancient Greeks with these advancements. This option is misleading as it implies a direct connection that is not supported by the text.
