Dolphins senses are very developed. Most dolphins have acute eyesight both in and out of the water, and they can hear frequencies ten times or more above the upper limit of adult human hearing. Hearing is also used for echolocation, which all dolphins have. Dolphin teeth are believed to function as antennae to receive incoming sound and to pinpoint the exact location of on object. Beyond locating an object, echolocation also provides the animal with an idea on the object's shape and size, though how exactly this works is not yet understood. The dolphin's sense of touch is also well-developed, with tree nerve endings densely packed in the skin, especially around the snout pectoral fins and genital area. However, dolphins lack an olfactory nerve and lobes and thus are believed to have no sense of smell. They do have a sense of taste and show preferences for certain kinds of fish. Dolphins are capable of making a broad range of sounds using nasal air sacs located just below the blowhole. Individual dolphins communicate using a variety of clicks, whistle-like sounds, and other vocalizations. The clicks are directional and ore for echolocation, often occurring in a short series called a click train. The click rate increases when approaching an object of interest. Dolphin echolocation clicks are amongst the loudest sounds made by marine animals.

Option 1: "Reverberate"

Explanation: The term 'reverberate' relates to the concept of sound waves bouncing back, which is closely associated with echolocation. In the context of the text, echolocation involves dolphins emitting sounds that reflect off objects, allowing them to determine location and distance. This aligns with the idea of reverberation, making it a suitable synonym.

Option 2: "Variety"

Explanation: The word 'variety' refers to a range of different things, which does not connect to the concept of echolocation. The text discusses the variety of sounds dolphins make, but this does not pertain to the meaning of echolocation itself, which is specifically about sound used for locating objects.

Option 3: "Sound"

Explanation: The term 'sound' is directly related to echolocation, as the process relies on sound waves emitted by dolphins to navigate and locate objects. The text emphasizes that dolphins use sound for echolocation, making this option a correct representation of the concept.

Option 4: "Beacon"

Explanation: The term 'beacon' typically refers to a signal or light used for guidance, which does not accurately reflect the meaning of echolocation. While echolocation serves a guiding purpose for dolphins, it fundamentally involves sound rather than a physical signal like a beacon.

Option 5: "Show preferences"

Explanation: The phrase 'show preferences' relates to dolphins' ability to choose certain types of fish, which connects to their sensory capabilities. While not a direct synonym for echolocation, it reflects the broader context of how dolphins utilize their senses, including sound, to make choices, thus making it a relevant option.
