There are many beliefs about the patterning of positive and negative mood over the course of the week. Support has been found for 'Blue Monday, 'Thank God it's Friday' and weekdays versus weekend effects, although in relatively small studies and often with student samples. Using telephone questionnaire data from a large national survey (N = 340,000), we examined day-of-week (DOW) effects on positive and negative moods. Unlike prior studies, we also tested the potential moderating effects of four demographic variables on DOW. Strong support was found for better mood on weekends and Fridays but there was minimal support for a 'Blue Monday' effect and no differences were observed between Saturdays and Sundays. Demographics moderated some DOW effects: DOW effects were diminished for older and retired respondents but there was little DOW difference by gender or presence of a partner. DOW is associated with mood but not always in ways we believe.

Option 3: "Previous research was relatively weak."

Explanation: The text refers to prior studies as being 'relatively small' and often based on student samples, which supports the assertion that previous research was weak.

Option 1: "The new research agreed with the old about Mondays."

Explanation: The text states that there was minimal support for a 'Blue Monday' effect, indicating that the new research does not agree with the old beliefs about Mondays being particularly negative.

Option 2: "Feelings decline through the weekend."

Explanation: The text mentions that strong support was found for better mood on weekends, which contradicts the idea that feelings decline through the weekend.

Option 4: "On the whole, women enjoy weekends more than men."

Explanation: The text indicates that there was little difference in DOW effects by gender, suggesting that this statement is not supported by the research.

Option 5: "Being in a relationship enhances weekday mood."

Explanation: The text does not provide evidence that being in a relationship enhances weekday mood; it states there was little DOW difference by the presence of a partner.

Option 6: "DOW effects reduce with increasing age."

Explanation: The text explicitly states that DOW effects were diminished for older and retired respondents, confirming that DOW effects reduce with increasing age.
