Paragraph list

Specifically (to be more specific), green tea may prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the bad type), which, in turn, can reduce the buildup in arteries, the researchers wrote.
In May 2006 researchers at Yale University School of Medicine weighed in on the issue with a review article that looked at more than 100 studies on the health benefits of green tea.
They pointed to what they called an “Asian paradox” which refers to lower rates of heart disease and cancer in Asia despite high rates of cigarette smoking.
They theorised that the 1.2 litres of green tea that is consumed by many Asians each day provide high levels of polyphenols and other antioxidants.
These compounds may work in several ways to improve cardiovascular health, including preventing blood platelets from sticking together and improving cholesterol levels.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of the text. It gives a broad overview of the research on green tea. It does not use any pronouns or definite articles that need prior context. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'They' which is a pronoun. This means it needs a previous sentence for context. Paragraph 3 also starts with 'They' and refers back to the researchers. Paragraph 4 uses 'These' which refers to compounds mentioned before. Paragraph 5 starts with 'Specifically' which shows it is not an independent sentence.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about green tea. It gives a specific conclusion about its health benefits. The phrase 'the researchers wrote' shows that this is the final point of the research.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it continues the discussion about the research on green tea. The phrase 'They pointed to' shows a logical order from the researchers' findings to their specific observations.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it explains the 'Asian paradox' mentioned before. The use of 'They theorised' shows a logical order from the observation to the explanation of why it happens.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it explains how the antioxidants from green tea work. The word 'These' refers back to the 'polyphenols and other antioxidants' mentioned in the previous paragraph.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it gives a specific example of how green tea helps health. The word 'Specifically' shows that it is giving more detail about the benefits mentioned before.
