Paragraph list

The subject in this study is Uguisu, “nightingale” in Japanese.
Her family came to the United States for two years while her father was a visiting scholar at Harvard, and they took residence in North Cambridge, a working-class neighbourhood.
Uguisu also attended public kindergarten of two hours every day, and later elementary school, but with no tutoring in English syntax. Most of her neighbourhood friends were in the same class at school.
The children in that neighbourhood were her primary source of language input.
This paper summarises some major data gathered in a longitudinal, naturalistic study of a Japanese girl learning English as a second language.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces the main topic of the paper. It gives a broad overview of what the study is about. It does not refer to any previous information. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "The subject" which refers back to the main topic, so it is not independent. Paragraph 3 starts with "Her family" which also refers back to the subject. Paragraph 4 starts with "The children" which refers to children already mentioned. Paragraph 5 starts with "Uguisu also attended" which assumes prior knowledge of Uguisu.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it wraps up the information about Uguisu's education. It gives details about her schooling and friends, which concludes the discussion about her language learning.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): The second paragraph follows the first because it explains who the subject of the study is. This is a logical order where the general statement about the study leads to a specific detail about the subject.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): The third paragraph connects to the second because it gives background information about Uguisu's family. This shows a logical order where we learn more about the subject's life.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): The fourth paragraph follows the third because it explains how the neighbourhood children influenced Uguisu's language learning. This shows a clear cause and effect relationship.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): The fifth paragraph connects to the fourth because it describes Uguisu's education and her friends. This shows a logical order where we see the impact of her language input on her schooling.
