Paragraph list

The mission intention was to record as much music as possible as quickly as possible, before encroaching influences like radio and the cinema began transforming the region’s distinctive culture.
Early in 1938, Folklore Research Mission with four-members was dispatched to the northeastern hinterlands of Brazil.
They recorded whoever and whatever seemed to be interesting: piano carriers, cowboys, beggars, voodoo priests, quarry workers, fishermen, dance troupes and even children at play.
But the Brazilian mission’s collection ended up languishing in vaults here.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic. It tells us when and what happened. It does not need another sentence for context. It is a general statement about the mission. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not meet the criteria for being independent. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'The mission intention', which refers back to the mission and is not independent. Paragraph 3 starts with 'They recorded', which uses a pronoun and needs context. Paragraph 4 starts with 'But', which is a conjunction and cannot be first.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the story. It shows the final outcome of the mission's work. It gives a conclusion to the earlier points about the recordings.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it continues the story of the mission. It explains the purpose of the mission after stating when it started. This shows a logical order.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it gives examples of what the mission recorded. This is a broader to specific strategy, where the second paragraph talks about the mission's goal and the third paragraph shows what they did.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it shows the result of the recordings. It contrasts the interesting recordings with the fact that they ended up in vaults. This is a contrast strategy.
