Paragraph list

I know you won’t want to hear this, but your work is still far from done.
So now that you’ve completed the research project, what do you do?
Developing a good, effective and concise report is an art form in itself.
And, in many research projects you will need to write multiple reports that present the results at different levels of detail for different audiences.
In fact, this final stage - writing up your research - may be one of the most difficult.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it asks a question about what to do after finishing a research project. It introduces the main topic without going into details. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, 'I know you won’t want to hear this...' starts with a pronoun and refers back to something not mentioned. 'In fact, this final stage...' uses 'In fact' which suggests it is not the start. 'Developing a good, effective and concise report...' is specific and does not introduce the topic. 'And, in many research projects...' starts with a conjunction and is not independent.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about writing reports. It gives a final thought on the need for different reports, which reflects the main theme of the text.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it continues the thought about what happens after the research project. It uses the Connector strategy by linking the question to the reality of more work.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it explains why the work is not done. It uses the Cause and Effect Relationship strategy, showing that writing is a difficult part of the process.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it gives more detail about the difficulty of writing reports. It uses the Broader to Specific Strategy, moving from a general statement about difficulty to specifics about report writing.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it explains the need for multiple reports. It uses the Logical Order strategy, showing how the idea of report writing leads to the need for different reports.
