Paragraph list

During a siege, attacking armies surrounded a castle and tried various means to gain access to the inside.
They were wheeled into position next to the castle so that attacking soldiers could climb up the rear of the tower and attempt to cross over to the castle walls.
Much of medieval warfare consisted of trying to capture castles by laying siege to them.
One of the main weapons used by attacking armies was a siege tower. Siege towers were large wooden structures.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it gives a broad overview of the topic. It introduces the main idea of medieval warfare and sets the stage for the following sentences. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'During a siege,' which needs context. Paragraph 3 mentions 'One of the main weapons,' which assumes prior knowledge. Paragraph 4 starts with 'They were wheeled,' which also needs context.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the explanation of how siege towers were used in the siege. It provides a clear conclusion to the topic of siege warfare.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it gives more detail about what happens during a siege. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it introduces a specific weapon used during a siege. This follows the Logical Order rule, as it continues the topic of siege warfare.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it explains how the siege tower was used. This follows the Topic Example rule, as it gives an example of the weapon mentioned.
