His formal education ended with grammar school, but his father tutored him on extensive travels. In 1893, his father got him a post with the Burma police, but his delicate health forced his return to Britain.
When World War I began, he enlisted as an ordinary soldier in the army and was unfortunately killed in action in 1916.
Hector Hugh Munro was born in Burma, the son of a police inspector-general. His mother died when he was two, and he was sent home to Scotland to live with relatives.
There he took up a career writing, and it was while doing political sketches for The Westminster Gazette that he adopted the pen-name of Saki. After serving for a time as a foreign correspondent for The Morning Post, he returned to London to devote himself to the writing of stories and novels.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces Hector Hugh Munro. It gives important background about his birth and family. This is an introductory nature, which makes it the topic sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "His formal education..." which is not independent because it uses a pronoun "his" that refers back to Munro. Paragraph 3 starts with "There he took up..." which is not independent because it uses "there" that needs context. Paragraph 4 starts with "When World War I began..." which is not independent because it refers to a specific event without context.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it concludes the story of Munro's life. It gives the final important event, which is his death in World War I.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): The second paragraph continues the story of Munro's life after his childhood. This shows a logical order of events in his life.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): The third paragraph shows what Munro did after his time in the Burma police. This is a logical order because it explains his career path.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): The fourth paragraph shows the next important event in Munro's life, which is his enlistment in World War I. This is a chronological order of events.
