Paragraph list

Harun is best known as the rich caliph in whose time the Arabian Nights was written.
These are the stories which the girl Shahrazad told to the caliph each night to save herself from being killed and include Sinbad, Aladdin and Ali Baba. The two men exchanged gifts, one of which was an elephant.
It is sometimes hard to imagine that certain great people, about whom there are marvellous stories, lived at the same time and knew each other.
His reputation spread to the east and he was much admired by Harun al-Rashid.
Charlemagne and the Caliph never met but we know that they sent presents to each other. Charlemagne became king in AD 771 and his court became a great centre of learning.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces a general idea about great people and their stories. It does not refer to any previous information. It sets the stage for the rest of the text. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "Charlemagne" which is a specific name and needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with "His reputation" which refers to someone mentioned before. Paragraph 4 starts with "Harun" which is also specific and needs context. Paragraph 5 starts with "These are the stories" which refers back to previous information.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it wraps up the discussion about the stories. It gives a final detail about the stories told to the caliph and connects back to the main theme of great people and their stories.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it gives an example of great people, Charlemagne and the Caliph. This shows a logical order from a general idea to a specific example.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 follows Paragraph 2 because it talks about the admiration for Harun al-Rashid, linking back to the previous mention of Charlemagne. This shows a logical order of ideas.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it explains who Harun al-Rashid is. This shows a logical order from admiration to identification.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 follows Paragraph 4 because it gives details about the stories from the time of Harun. This shows a logical order from identifying Harun to explaining the stories.
