Paragraph list

Another one, white dwarfs are caused by shrinking after their nuclear activity has ceased; in time they may become cold, black dwarfs.
Sometimes they start to give off more light than apparently they should and they grow into red, yellow and blue giants.
Sometimes these grow even larger and may change colour and become supergiants, 10,000 times as bright as the Sun.
Ordinary small stars are red, larger ones are yellow and still larger ones are blue.
There are many different types of star, and all the stars are at many different stages of development. There colour tells us a great deal about them.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces the main topic about stars. It gives a broad overview of different types of stars and their stages. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not choosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "Ordinary" which is not general. Paragraph 3 starts with "Sometimes" which is a conjunction. Paragraph 4 starts with "Sometimes" too, which is also a conjunction. Paragraph 5 starts with "Another one" which is not independent because it refers back to something else.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it introduces a new type of star and wraps up the discussion about stars. It does not connect back to the previous paragraphs, which makes it a good conclusion.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): This pair connects because Paragraph 2 gives specific examples of the types of stars mentioned in Paragraph 1. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): This pair connects because Paragraph 3 explains what happens to the stars mentioned in Paragraph 2. This follows the Logical Order rule.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): This pair connects because Paragraph 4 continues the idea of stars growing larger from Paragraph 3. This follows the Logical Order rule.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): This pair connects because Paragraph 5 introduces a different type of star, white dwarfs, after discussing supergiants. This follows the Same Theme rule.
