Paragraph list

The only way to save the temple was to saw it into great blocks, some of them weighing up to 30 tons, and to raise it piece by piece several hundred metres up the cliff face. There it was reassembled out of reach of the water.
It was built in the solid rock 3200 years ago, and was guarded by statues of the pharaoh, 21 metres high, also cut out of the solid rock.
This extraordinary engineering feat took four whole years to complete, and even then only just in time.
Chief among these was the rock temple of the pharaoh Ramesses II.
When the Aswan dam was built across the Nile and completed in the 1960s, the waters of the river began to rise and threatened to drown some of the marvels of ancient Egypt.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first line because it introduces the main topic. It talks about the Aswan dam and how it affected ancient Egypt. This is a broad overview of the situation. It does not use any words that need prior context. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with "Chief among these" which needs context from the previous sentence. Paragraph 3 starts with "It was built" which uses a pronoun that refers back to something not yet mentioned. Paragraph 4 starts with "The only way" which uses the definite article "the" and assumes prior knowledge. Paragraph 5 starts with "When the Aswan dam" but is not independent because it needs context.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last line because it summarizes the effort to save the temple. It gives a conclusion to the story by showing how long it took to complete the work.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it uses the connector "chief among these". This shows that the temple is one of the marvels mentioned in the first paragraph.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it gives more details about the temple. It follows the broader to specific strategy, where the second paragraph introduces the temple and the third paragraph explains its history.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it continues the story of the temple. It shows the cause and effect relationship. The temple was built long ago, and now there is a need to save it.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects with Paragraph 4 because it explains the result of the actions taken to save the temple. It follows the logical order of events, showing what happened after the temple was saved.
