Paragraph list

Despite the threat of severe penalties, coffee drinking spread rapidly among the Arabs and their neighbours, and had established its popularity in Europe and North America by the end of the seventeenth century.
'Coffee' comes from the Arabic word 'qahweh'.
According to legend, Kaldi, an Arab goatherd in Ethiopia, first discovered coffee in about 850 AD, after noticing the strange effects the plant had on some of his flock who had been feeding on it.
Before its use as a beverage, coffee was a food, then a wine and later a medicine.
But it was not until the thirteenth century that coffee reached Arabia, and 200 years later, Turkey. From there it was introduced into Europe.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of coffee. It uses the rule of Topic Sentence because it gives a clear idea about what the text will discuss. It does not need any other sentence for context. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not meet the criteria for being independent. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'According to legend', which is a reference phrase. Paragraph 3 starts with 'But', which is a conjunction. Paragraph 4 starts with 'Before', which also indicates a connection to something else. Paragraph 5 starts with 'Despite', which is another conjunction. All these words show that these sentences depend on other information.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the story about coffee. It uses Conclusive Words like 'by the end of the seventeenth century', which shows the final point of the text. It brings together all the earlier points about coffee's history and popularity.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it gives more information about coffee. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy. The first sentence talks about the word 'coffee', and the second sentence tells a story about its discovery.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it continues the story of coffee. This shows Logical Order. The second paragraph tells how coffee was discovered, and the third paragraph explains what happened next.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it gives more details about coffee's history. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy. The third paragraph talks about when coffee reached different places, and the fourth paragraph explains its uses before it became a drink.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it shows the result of coffee's history. This follows the Cause and Effect Relationship. The fourth paragraph explains how coffee was used, and the fifth paragraph tells how it became popular.
