Paragraph list

They were called the Trades in the times when much world trade was done by sailing ships.
A breeze is a light wind. Where the land and the sea meet, for example, you get land and sea breezes in summer.
Many winds have names. Among the most constant winds are the Trade Winds. These winds blow towards the tropics and blow most of the year round.
Ships always tried to avoid other areas in tropical oceans where winds hardly ever blow. These are called the Doldrums.
This is because the air is hotter over the land than the sea by day and cooler over land than sea at night.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces the main topic about winds. It gives a broad overview of the Trade Winds without going into details. It does not use any words that need prior context. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with 'They were called the Trades,' which needs context from the first paragraph. Paragraph 3 starts with 'Ships always tried,' which also needs context. Paragraph 4 starts with 'A breeze is a light wind,' which is too specific and does not introduce the topic. Paragraph 5 starts with 'This is because,' which refers back to something earlier.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it wraps up the explanation about breezes. It gives a clear reason for the information shared in the previous paragraphs.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it explains what the Trade Winds are called. This shows a logical order from general information about winds to specific information about the Trade Winds.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it talks about ships and their experiences with winds. This shows a logical order from the Trade Winds to the areas ships avoid.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it introduces the concept of breezes, which are related to winds. This shows a logical order from discussing the Doldrums to explaining breezes.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it explains why breezes happen. This shows a logical order from defining breezes to explaining their causes.
