Paragraph list

Plato believed, like Socrates, that asking questions was the right way to teach and let the pupils discover the truth for themselves. His Dialogues, which were discussions between various people, included a great deal of this teaching.
Plato's most famous work was The Republic, in which he discussed the ideal state or society. Plato also described the last hours and thoughts of his master Socrates in a book called phaedo.
Plato's school was established in a park and gymnasium about 2 kilometres outside the city walls.
This park was sacred to the hero Academus, and so Plato's school became known as the Academy, a word still used today for some types of school.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first because it introduces the main topic about Plato's school. It gives a clear starting point without needing other sentences for context. It does not use any pronouns or definite articles that refer to previous ideas. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with "This park" which uses a pronoun that refers back to the park mentioned in Paragraph 1. Paragraph 3 starts with "Plato believed" which needs more context to understand. Paragraph 4 starts with "Plato's most famous work" which assumes prior knowledge of Plato's works.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last because it summarizes important information about Plato's works. It wraps up the discussion about Plato by mentioning his famous book, The Republic, and his thoughts on Socrates.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it explains more about the park mentioned in Paragraph 1. This is a logical order because it goes from a general statement about the school to a specific detail about the park.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it shifts the focus from the park and the school to Plato's teaching methods. This shows a logical order as it moves from the location of the school to what happened there.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it continues to discuss Plato's ideas and works. It logically follows as it goes from his teaching methods to his famous works.
