Paragraph list

The modern fiction writer is artistically more self-conscious and he realizes that there are many ways of telling a story; he decides upon a method before he begins, and may even set up rules for himself.
Instead of telling the story himself, he may let one of his characters tell it for him; he may tell it by means of letters or diaries; he may confine himself to recording the thoughts of just one of his characters.
"Once upon a time", he began, and proceeded to narrate the story to his listeners, describing the characters when necessary, telling what they thought and felt as well as what they did, and adding comments and ideas of his own.
The primitive story-teller, free from all considerations of form, simply told a tale.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of storytelling. It does not refer to any previous information and gives a broad overview of the primitive story-teller. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with "Instead of telling the story himself," which needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with "Once upon a time," which is also not independent. Paragraph 4 uses "he may" which refers back to a character, so it is not independent.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph concludes the text by summarizing the different ways a modern writer can tell a story. It wraps up the discussion about storytelling methods, which follows the rule of Summary Style.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it continues the idea of storytelling. The phrase "he began" shows a logical order from the primitive storyteller to a more developed way of telling a story.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it shows how storytelling has changed. The phrase "The modern fiction writer" indicates a shift to a more complex way of storytelling, following the narrative from the previous paragraph.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it gives examples of how the modern writer can tell a story. The phrase "Instead of telling the story himself" shows a logical flow from the methods discussed in the previous paragraph.
