Paragraph list

Esperanto had some early success, but the intervention of two world wars did not help its wider adoption. In the Second World War, some leaders thought it was a secret language that could be used by spies.
And there's hope that the Internet will further assist the spread of the language. Wikipedia already has 215,000 pages in Esperanto, and there are several translation and social media apps on the market.
The artificial language of Esperanto was invented in 1887 by the Polish doctor Ludwik Zamenhof, who hoped that a language designed to be spoken by everyone, would contribute to world peace.
He made it as easy to learn as possible, with no irregular verbs, a vocabulary adapted from the Latin languages, and a simple grammar without gender or case.
However, Esperanto survived the twentieth century and spread by word of mouth and via books, newspaper articles, and four feature-length movies.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of Esperanto. It gives a broad overview of the language's invention and purpose. It does not use any referencing phrases that need prior context. Why other lines are not chosen? Paragraph 2 starts with 'He', which is a pronoun that refers back to Zamenhof, so it cannot be independent. Paragraph 3 starts with 'Esperanto had', which is not a general statement. Paragraph 4 starts with 'However', which is a conjunction. Paragraph 5 starts with 'And', which is also a conjunction.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about Esperanto. It gives a hopeful conclusion about the future of the language with the Internet. It summarizes the earlier points about its history and features.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it continues the topic of Esperanto. It explains how Zamenhof made the language easy to learn. This shows a logical order from the invention to its features.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it shows the result of Esperanto's features. It explains that despite being easy to learn, the language faced challenges during the world wars. This shows a cause and effect relationship.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it shows a contrast. It starts with 'However', which indicates that despite the challenges mentioned in Paragraph 3, Esperanto still survived and spread. This shows a logical order from problems to solutions.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it continues the theme of spreading Esperanto. It shows that there is hope for the future of the language with the Internet. This shows a broader to specific strategy, moving from past success to future possibilities.
