Paragraph list

At the first moment of impact, she was convinced of immediate blindness but the bone had protected her, as the doctor from the high-walled house later assured her.
In the tale that she constructed for herself, there were significant moments in her progress; such os the day she was twelve years old and her brother quick- swung a golf club behind him ond hit her full in the eye.
The golf club had clean missed the eye and she was left with only a few stitches that healed to o pole drawing of past suffering.
It was a simple desire — not to be like her mother — that led Karen to create her own story, her own mythology, a mythology of difference and strength.
When she opened her eyes in the doctor's white-walled consulting room, overlooking the tennis Courts, and saw her mother clear before her, muttering predictably and paradoxically about both miracles and small mercies, she knew that she was saved for some purpose.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first line because it introduces the main idea of Karen's desire and her story. It sets up the theme of the text without going into details. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? Other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone as the first sentence. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'In the tale...' which needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with 'At the first moment...' which also needs prior information. Paragraph 4 starts with 'The golf club...' which refers to something not yet mentioned. Paragraph 5 starts with 'When she opened her eyes...' which is a continuation of a story.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last line because it wraps up the story. It shows the final moment when Karen realises she is saved. This follows the rule of Conclusive Words, as it gives a sense of closure to the narrative.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it gives examples of significant moments in Karen's story. This follows the Broader to Specific strategy, where the first paragraph introduces the main idea and the second paragraph provides specific details.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it describes a specific moment from the tale mentioned in Paragraph 2. This follows the Logical Order rule, as it continues the story from the previous paragraph.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it explains the result of the impact mentioned in Paragraph 3. This follows the Cause and Effect relationship rule, where the second paragraph shows what happened after the first.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it shows the outcome of the events described in Paragraph 4. This follows the Chronological Order rule, as it describes what happened after the healing.
