Paragraph list

Though many distinct cultures are prevalent around the world today, those that are the most dominant have origins in one of a few areas called 'culture hearths'.
The word "culture" generally refers to a specific group's particular way of life.
These are the heartlands of various cultures and, historically, there are seven main locations from which the most dominant cultural ideas have spread.
It includes the social meanings of various aspects of life, such as race, ethnicity, values, languages, religions, and clothing styles.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of the text, which is the meaning of the word "culture". It does not need another sentence for context. It is a general statement that sets up the discussion about culture. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with "It includes" which is a pronoun and needs the previous sentence for meaning. Paragraph 3 starts with "Though" which is a conjunction and also needs context. Paragraph 4 starts with "These are" which refers back to something not yet mentioned.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about culture hearths. It gives a summary of the main points and shows where the dominant cultural ideas come from. It provides closure to the topic.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it gives more details about the meaning of culture. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy, where the first sentence gives a general idea and the second sentence explains it further.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it shifts from discussing the meanings of culture to talking about where dominant cultures come from. This shows a Logical Order as it moves from specific details to a broader context.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it explains what the culture hearths are. This follows the Topic Example rule, where the second sentence gives examples of the first sentence's topic.
