It sets up the argument and prepares the reader for what you will be writing about.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of the essay. It uses the rule of Topic Sentence because it clearly states what the essay will be about. It does not need any other sentence for context. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not meet the criteria for being independent. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'You can do this,' which refers back to something not mentioned yet. Paragraph 3 starts with 'Good first paragraphs,' which is not general enough. Paragraph 4 starts with 'The first paragraph,' which uses 'the' and assumes prior knowledge. Paragraph 5 starts with 'To begin an essay,' but it is not general enough to stand alone.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it summarizes the main points about good first paragraphs. It uses the Summary Style rule because it brings together the ideas from the earlier paragraphs.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it uses the Connector strategy. It explains how to grab the reader's attention by talking about the first paragraph.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 using the Logical Order strategy. It continues the idea of the first paragraph being important.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 using the Broader to Specific strategy. It gives more details about why the first paragraph is important.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects with Paragraph 4 using the Topic Example strategy. It gives examples of what a good first paragraph should include.
