Paragraph list

The approach doesn't always require researchers to observe people in such exotic environments, however.
It can be conducted in any kind of social or organizational setting, including offices, schools, or just about any other place where people can be observed.
It's sometimes referred to as field work because it requires researchers to go out into the field (the natural setting) to collect data on their participants.
Naturalistic observation involves observing subjects of interest in their normal, everyday setting.
For example, cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead used naturalistic observation to study the daily lives of different groups in the South Pacific.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of naturalistic observation. It gives a clear overview of what naturalistic observation is about without going into details. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with "It's sometimes referred to..." which uses a pronoun and needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with "For example..." which shows it is giving an example and needs a main idea first. Paragraph 4 starts with "The approach..." which uses the definite article and assumes prior knowledge. Paragraph 5 starts with "It can be conducted..." which also uses a pronoun and needs context.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about naturalistic observation. It gives a final thought on where this observation can take place. This follows the Summary Style rule, as it brings together the earlier points about the approach.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects to Paragraph 1 because it explains more about naturalistic observation. It uses the Broader to Specific Strategy. The first paragraph gives a general idea, and the second paragraph gives more detail about what it means to go into the field.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects to Paragraph 2 because it gives an example of field work. This follows the Topic Example rule. The second paragraph talks about field work, and the third paragraph shows a real-life example of it.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects to Paragraph 3 because it shifts the focus from a specific example to a broader idea about the approach. This follows the Logical Order rule. The third paragraph gives a specific case, and the fourth paragraph talks about the general idea of the approach.
  • Pair 4 (Paragraph 4 → Paragraph 5): Paragraph 5 connects to Paragraph 4 because it explains where naturalistic observation can happen. This follows the Cause and Effect Relationship rule. The fourth paragraph says the approach does not need exotic places, and the fifth paragraph shows that it can happen in many common places.
