Paragraph list

Few communities have the chance to create something brand-new on a significant piece of land — and even fewer can develop that land in a way that confronts climate change, generates jobs, and attracts investment.
Land is scarce in many parts of our fast-urbanizing world.
In those regions, the transition away from coal offers the prospect of re purposing post-mining land — fueling both economic opportunities and clean energy.
But that opportunity is now presenting itself in Bosnia, Greece, Poland, Serbia and soon in the very large coal-producing and consuming economies in South and East Asia.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of land scarcity. It does not need another sentence for context. It sets up the main idea without going into details. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with 'Few communities' which needs context. Paragraph 3 starts with 'But that opportunity' which refers back to something not yet mentioned. Paragraph 4 starts with 'In those regions' which also needs prior information.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the main ideas. It explains the opportunity and gives a conclusion about the transition away from coal. This follows the rule of Summary Style.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it continues the idea of land. The first paragraph talks about land scarcity, and the second talks about how few communities can use land. This shows a logical order of ideas.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it talks about the opportunity mentioned in the second paragraph. The word 'But' shows a contrast and links the two ideas. This follows the Connector Strategy.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it explains what the opportunity is. It talks about the transition away from coal in the regions mentioned. This shows a logical order of ideas.
