Paragraph list

By 1817, trousers were shoe-length. Popular with the king, they became accepted as standard daywear by 1825, and were worn with a waistcoat and, by day, a frock coat, but with a tailcoat in the evening.
Jackets didn't become fashionable for casual wear until the 1850s. The jacket was derived from the short jacket worn by boys and working men, and in the age of mass-production and ready-made suits, its simple style was easier to produce than the tailored coat.
It was George "Beau" Brummell, the champion of simple English style, who started a trend for wearing tight black trousers in the early 1800s.
The favorite patterns for trousers were strong plaids, stripes and checks. The loose straight cut came in about the 1860s, and front creases in the 1880s. By the turn of the century, they had become the common way to dress.

First sentence: Why this is the first line? This paragraph is the first sentence because it introduces the main topic of the text, which is about the trend of trousers started by George "Beau" Brummell. It does not refer to any previous information and sets the stage for the discussion about trousers. This follows the rule of Topic Sentence. Why other lines are not chosen? The other paragraphs are not chosen as the first sentence because they do not stand alone. For example, Paragraph 2 starts with "By 1817," which needs context. Paragraph 3 uses a pronoun "who" that refers back to Brummell, and Paragraph 4 talks about jackets, which is not the main topic at the start.

Concluding sentence: Why this is the last line? This paragraph is the last sentence because it wraps up the discussion about clothing styles. It introduces jackets and explains their history, which is a natural conclusion to the topic of fashion trends. This follows the Summary Style rule.

Paragraph pairs:

  • Pair 1 (Paragraph 1 → Paragraph 2): Paragraph 2 connects with Paragraph 1 because it continues the topic of trousers. The first paragraph introduces Brummell and his influence on trousers, and the second paragraph gives more details about the style of trousers by 1817. This follows the Logical Order rule.
  • Pair 2 (Paragraph 2 → Paragraph 3): Paragraph 3 connects with Paragraph 2 because it talks about the patterns and styles of trousers after they became popular. The second paragraph discusses the acceptance of trousers, and the third paragraph gives more details about their patterns and cuts. This follows the Broader to Specific Strategy.
  • Pair 3 (Paragraph 3 → Paragraph 4): Paragraph 4 connects with Paragraph 3 because it shifts the focus from trousers to jackets. The third paragraph ends with trousers becoming common, and the fourth paragraph introduces jackets and their history. This follows the Topic Example rule.
