In the early days of the settlement of Australia, enterprising settlers unwisely introduced the European rabbit. This rabbit had no natural enemies in the antipodes, so that it multiplied with that promiscuous abandon characteristic of rabbits. It overran a whole continent. It caused devastation by burrowing, and by devouring the herbage, which might have maintained millions of sheep and cattle. Scientists discovered that this particular variety of rabbit, and apparently no other animal most susceptible to a fatal virus disease, myxomatosis. By infecting animals and letting them loose in the burrows, local epidemics of this disease could be created. Later, it was found that there was a type of mosquito which acted as the carrier of this disease and pass it on to the rabbits. So while the rest of the world was trying to get rid of mosquitoes. Option 1: "manageable"

Explanation: The text discusses the introduction of rabbits to Australia and the subsequent efforts to control their population through the use of myxomatosis. The phrase 'there were hopes, however, that the problem of the rabbit would become manageable' aligns with the overall theme of finding a solution to the rabbit overpopulation issue. The use of 'manageable' suggests that while the problem is significant, it can be controlled, which is consistent with the context of the text.

Option 2: "widespread"

Explanation: The term 'widespread' implies that the problem is extensive and pervasive, which does not fit the context of the sentence. The text indicates that there were hopes for control over the rabbit population, not that the problem would become more extensive. Therefore, this option contradicts the main idea of seeking a solution.

Option 3: "out of control"

Explanation: The phrase 'out of control' suggests a situation that cannot be managed or contained, which is the opposite of what the text conveys. The text expresses hope that the rabbit problem could be managed, making this option inconsistent with the author's tone and intent.

Option 4: "troublesome"

Explanation: While 'troublesome' indicates that the rabbits are a problem, it does not convey the sense of potential control implied in the text. The text suggests that there is hope for managing the rabbit population, which is not captured by the term 'troublesome.' This makes the option too vague and not aligned with the specific context of the sentence.
