Instructions ›

The Valley of the Kings is a rocky, narrow gorge which was used as a cemetery by the Pharaohs or kings of ancient Egypt, between 1550 and 1100 BC. The valley, sometimes called the Valley of the Tombs of the Kings, lies on the West Bank of the Nile River, across from Luxor and Karnak. The tombs are in the form of corridors and chambers cut into the rock walls of the valley, carved and painted religious scenes and hieroglyphic texts cover the wall. The tombs include those of SETI, the first Tutankhamun through most of the third Ramses the 2nd, and Ramses the third. Across the Nile, a huge temple built in honour of the sun god, Amen-Ra stands at Karnak. This temple was the largest temple in ancient Egypt. Its columned Great Hall was completed by Pharaoh Ramses the second during the 1200s BC. The walls and columns of the temple feature carvings and (hieroglyphics).

Option 2: "hieroglyphics"

Explanation: The text explicitly states that 'carved and painted religious scenes and hieroglyphic texts cover the wall.' This directly supports the answer 'hieroglyphics' as the correct choice, as it refers specifically to the writing system used in the tombs, aligning perfectly with the context provided.

Option 1: "religious texts"

Explanation: While the text mentions 'religious scenes and hieroglyphic texts,' the term 'religious texts' is too broad and does not specifically refer to the unique writing system used in ancient Egypt. The text specifically highlights 'hieroglyphics' as the form of writing present in the tombs.

Option 3: "pictographs"

Explanation: Although 'pictographs' refers to symbols representing objects or concepts, it is not the term used in the text. The text specifically mentions 'hieroglyphics,' which is a more accurate term for the writing found in the tombs. Therefore, 'pictographs' does not fit the context.

Option 4: "ancient scripts"

Explanation: The term 'ancient scripts' is too vague and does not specifically refer to the writing system used in the Valley of the Kings. The text clearly identifies 'hieroglyphics' as the specific form of writing, making 'ancient scripts' an incomplete and less precise option.
