Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4184 Medium Podcasting
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
Scott: I know you got into podcasting pretty much at the beginning. How did you first hear of it?
Dave: I was an avid reader of blogs, and I was aware that some bloggers were starting to attach audio files. That excited me. I had never written my own blog – I’m not really much of a writer – but I knew that doing something with audio would be my kind of thing. I read a newspaper article early in 2004, February, I think, which mentioned podcasting. So I started to look into it, but I didn’t feel that I had the technical capabilities. I was also busy with work, I’m a graphic designer, so I sort of forgot about the idea for a while.
Scott: But you came back to it and started your own podcast early in 2005.
Dave: That’s right. In January, to be exact. Um, by then all the tools were available, and I had enough free time to devote to my own podcast. Of course I didn’t know if anyone would listen to it, but - just being able to broadcast something was enough for me.

Option 3: "just being able to broadcast something was enough for me"

Explanation: This option is correct as it directly reflects Dave's sentiment expressed in the text. He states, 'just being able to broadcast something was enough for me,' which captures his excitement and satisfaction with the act of podcasting, regardless of the audience.

Option 1: "I've always been a prolific writer"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because Dave explicitly states, 'I’m not really much of a writer,' indicating that he does not consider himself a prolific writer. Therefore, this statement contradicts his own self-assessment.

Option 2: "I've always been a graphic designer"

Explanation: While Dave mentions that he is a graphic designer, the phrase 'I've always been' implies a continuous state that is not supported by the text. The text does not provide information about his career history, making this option misleading.

Option 4: "bloggers starting giving me money"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because there is no mention in the text of bloggers giving money to Dave or anyone else. The text focuses on Dave's interest in podcasting and his initial hesitations, making this statement irrelevant and unsupported.
