Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4223 Medium Sound
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
The larynx is a complex system of muscle and cartilage that supports and moves the vocal cords, or, as they’re more accurately known, the vocal folds. Strung between the thyroid and arytenoid cartilages, these two muscles form an elastic curtain that opens and shuts across the trachea, the tube that carries air through the throat. The folds are apart when we’re breathing, but when we speak, they slam shut. Our lungs push air against the closed folds, blowing them open and vibrating the tissue to produce sound. Unlike the deliberate focus required for playing an external instrument, we effortlessly change notes as we speak. By pushing air faster or slower, we change the frequency and amplitude of these vibrations, which respectively translate to the pitch and volume of our voices. Rapid and small vibrations create high-pitched, quiet tones, while slow, large vibrations produce deep, bellowing rumbles. Finally, by moving the laryngeal muscles between the cartilages, we can stretch and contract those folds - to intuitively play our internal instruments.

Option 3: "to intuitively play our internal instruments"

Explanation: This option accurately reflects the concluding thought of the text, which discusses how we can manipulate our vocal folds to create sound. The phrase 'intuitively play our internal instruments' encapsulates the idea of using our laryngeal muscles to produce varied vocal sounds, aligning perfectly with the text's main theme.

Option 1: "to understand the complex system of muscle and cartilage"

Explanation: This option does not align with the main idea of the text, which focuses on how the larynx and vocal folds function during speaking and breathing. While understanding the anatomy is important, the text emphasizes the action of using the larynx to produce sound rather than merely understanding it.

Option 2: "to differentiate between breathing and speaking"

Explanation: Although the text mentions the difference between breathing and speaking, this option does not capture the essence of the concluding statement. The text is more about the action of producing sound rather than merely distinguishing between the two processes.

Option 4: "to help lungs push air out"

Explanation: While the text does mention the role of the lungs in pushing air, this option is too narrow and does not encompass the broader context of how sound is produced through the interaction of the vocal folds and larynx. It fails to address the creative aspect of voice modulation discussed in the text.
