Now researchers in Finland report that ants there that have encountered a pathogenic fungus appear to fight the infection by eating foods high in free radicals. Those are molecules with a talent for causing cell damage, in this case, to the cells of the fungus. That's according to a study in the journal Evolution. The researchers collected some 400 wild ants. They exposed some to the fungus, and left the rest alone. Then they offered up a sort of eggy custard - either plain, or laced with free radicals - in the form of hydrogen peroxide. Uninfected ants didn't want anything to do with the radical-rich food. Which makes sense. “Exactly, I mean we don't take painkillers on a daily basis, or we don't take antimicrobial agents on on a daily basis. Because that would have really severe side effects on the organism." Dalial Freitak, an insect immunologist at the University of Helsinki. Sick ants, on the other hand, preferred the peroxide diet - even before developing a full-blown infection. And the medicine - upped their odds of survival some 30 percent.

Option 1: "upped their odds of survival some 30 percent"

Explanation: The text states that sick ants preferred the peroxide diet, which "upped their odds of survival some 30 percent." This directly supports the idea that consuming the radical-rich food improved their chances of surviving the infection, aligning with the main idea of the text that discusses how certain foods can act as medicine for ants.

Option 2: "harmed their odds of survival"

Explanation: This option contradicts the information in the text. The text clearly indicates that the peroxide diet improved the ants' survival odds, not harmed them. Therefore, this option is not supported by the text.

Option 3: "boosted their fight against rivals"

Explanation: While this option suggests an improvement, it misinterprets the context. The text focuses on survival against a pathogenic fungus, not competition with rivals. Thus, this option does not relate to the main idea of the text.

Option 4: "exposed them to fungus"

Explanation: This option is incorrect as it implies a negative consequence rather than a beneficial effect. The text discusses how ants reacted to the fungus and how they used certain foods to combat it, rather than being exposed to it as a positive outcome.
