Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4240 Medium Globalisation
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
One of the biggest challenges facing employers and educators today is the rapid advance of globalisation. The marketplace is no longer national or regional, but extends to all corners of the world, and this requires a global ready workforce. Universities have a large part to play in preparing students for the twenty-first century labour market by promoting international educational experiences. The most obvious way universities can help develop a global workforce is by encouraging students to study abroad as part of their course. Students who have experienced another culture firsthand are more likely to be global ready when they graduate. There are, of course, well established international undergraduate student exchange schemes, such as Erasmus, which operates within Europe, and the exchange partnerships that exist between universities around the world. The Fulbright program in the US enables graduate students to study and conduct research abroad. We need to expand and add to such schemes - to enable many more students to study abroad.

Option 4: "to enable many more students to study abroad"

Explanation: This option directly reflects the concluding statement of the text, which emphasizes the need to expand existing schemes to allow more students to study abroad. It aligns perfectly with the main idea of preparing a global ready workforce by promoting international educational experiences.

Option 1: "to enable a world-wide-web based workforce"

Explanation: This option introduces the term 'world-wide-web based workforce,' which is not mentioned in the text. The text focuses on the need for a global ready workforce, not specifically a web-based one. Therefore, this option does not align with the main idea of preparing students for a global market.

Option 2: "to enable global ready colleges"

Explanation: While the text discusses the need for a global ready workforce, it does not mention 'global ready colleges.' The focus is on preparing students, not on the colleges themselves. This makes the option irrelevant to the context of the text.

Option 3: "to enable Fulbright program"

Explanation: This option incorrectly suggests that the Fulbright program itself is the focus. The text mentions the Fulbright program as an example of a scheme that helps students study abroad, but it does not imply that enabling the program is the goal. Thus, this option does not fit the context.
