Practice Listening: Select Missing Word ID: #4246 Medium Business influence
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. At the end of the recording the last word or group of words has been replaced by a beep. Select the correct option to complete the recording.
Interviewer: So what is it that makes a businessman or business woman influential?
DS: Well, first we ought to think about what we mean by influential. Lots of business people enjoy success but relatively few become influential, really have an influence, on the people around them, on society, on the world.
Interviewer: Ok, so who would you say were influential? What names come to mind? DS: Well, sometimes it isn’t the names that come to mind, sometimes it’s the product. Obviously we’ve got the big names - Bill Gates, Henry Ford, people like that. Sometimes the names are not familiar at all - like Sam Walton. Interviewer: Sam who?
DS: Exactly! Sam Walton was the man who perfected the idea of the discount store. The Wal-Mart stores are his. It’s the biggest chain of retailers in the world and in the States Wal-Mart employs more than 1.3 million people.
Interviewer: Wow! He’s a rich man! DS: He was. He died in 1992, but yes, his heirs are worth more than $100 billion - that’s more than Bill Gates. If he was alive today he’d probably - be the richest man in the world.

Option 2: "be the richest man in the world"

Explanation: This option is correct as it directly aligns with the text where it states that if Sam Walton were alive today, he would likely be the richest man in the world. This is supported by the mention of his heirs' wealth exceeding that of Bill Gates, emphasizing the financial aspect.

Option 1: "be the wisest man in the world"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because the text specifically discusses wealth and influence, not wisdom. The context of the conversation revolves around financial success and influence in business, making wisdom irrelevant to the statement.

Option 3: "be an employee at Wal-Mart"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because it contradicts the context of the text. The discussion is about Sam Walton's influence and wealth, not about him being an employee. The text highlights his role as the founder of Wal-Mart, not as an employee.

Option 4: "be influential in business"

Explanation: This option is incorrect as it does not capture the specific context of the statement. While being influential is a theme in the conversation, the text specifically concludes that Walton would be the richest man, not just influential. Therefore, it lacks the necessary specificity related to wealth.
