Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #37891 Short Oxford
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
I was one of those unlikely people that knew I wanted to study law several years before I went to Oxford. But, I equally clearly knew I didn’t want to be a lawyer. Many elements of the law fascinated but it was much more the human side than the technical side. So, I enjoyed criminal law and I enjoyed some of the elements about philosophy. Deep down I was a lousy lawyer and as I graduated, my tutor said, you might want to think about the prison service, basically whatever you do, any field but law. But did you find that background in law helpful for your career in international development? I did and I am still one of those strange people who read law reports sometimes, not the whole thing but the summaries and I am interested in those legal issues. I have never used my practical legal skills but I have used a lot of the disciplines that I gained and I think that helped me get a start in my career.

Option 3: "She had a successful career as an international lawyer"

Explanation: This statement is not true as the speaker indicates that she never used her practical legal skills and was advised to consider any field but law. Thus, claiming she had a successful career as an international lawyer contradicts her narrative.

Option 1: "She always wanted to study law"

Explanation: The speaker mentions that she knew she wanted to study law several years before attending Oxford, indicating a clear desire to pursue law. However, this does not imply that she always wanted to study law, as her interest was more about the human aspects rather than the technical side.

Option 2: "She wanted to develop a career in criminal law"

Explanation: While the speaker enjoyed criminal law, she explicitly states that she did not want to be a lawyer. Therefore, the statement about wanting to develop a career in criminal law is incorrect.

Option 4: "She was more interested in the human side of the law than the technical side"

Explanation: The speaker clearly states that she was more fascinated by the human side of law than the technical side, making this statement true.
