Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #4043 Medium Bio marking
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
You know, your breath is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and only 1% of other gases. That 1% includes thousands of organic compounds or biomarkers which can help me to detect diseases such as diabetes, breast cancer or kidney failure, lung cancer. But there is one big challenge here; concentration. The biomarkers concentration difference between healthy people and patients is only parts per billion. How small is that? It's similar to finding a drop of dye in Olympic sized swimming pool. Is it even detectable? Yes. Dogs and bees have the ability to detect parts per trillions, a thousand times less concentrated. However, as far as I know, getting a detailed diagnosis from a bee is not easy without getting stung. So the question then becomes how can we humans detect this tiny concentration? The answer is on my fingertip. This is a device made by a spongelike film of billions of nanoparticles, each of them has a diameter of a few atoms, 1,000 times smaller than tip of your hair. If you blow onto my sensor, it can detect even the tiniest possibility of having a disease in your body. But how? It's all based on a chemical reaction within the biomarker in your breath and the surface of my sensor.

Option 3: "Using breath sensors to detect diseases"

Explanation: This option is correct as it aligns with the main idea of the text. The speaker discusses how a device can detect diseases through breath analysis, focusing on the technology and its application in diagnosing health conditions.

Option 1: "The biomarkers concentration is higher in healthy people"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because the text states that the concentration difference in biomarkers between healthy individuals and patients is very small, specifically only parts per billion. Therefore, it contradicts the information presented in the text.

Option 2: "The biomarkers concentration is higher in patients"

Explanation: This option is also incorrect as the text indicates that the concentration of biomarkers is not higher in patients but rather that the difference is minimal. It does not support the claim made in this option.

Option 4: "Devices made of nanoparticles are really good"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because while the text mentions devices made of nanoparticles, it does not emphasize their general effectiveness. Instead, it focuses on their specific use in detecting diseases through breath analysis.
