Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #4137 Medium Australian Science
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
Many different ways of observing the world are beautifully encapsulated in this book, Best Australian Science 2018, which has a bit of a focus on quantum physics, my passion, and mathematics, and I definitely encourage you to read it. I have loved reading through the short stories, there are 33 of them, and they will challenge your views on the world and the insights into life as we currently understand them. From cosmology and the point of life itself, all the way through to the very make-up of our being, with the world at the scale of atoms. As a practicing scientist, we tend to write experimental scientific papers. Which we describe very complex experiments, where you need a large amount of background reading in order to be able to understand what we've done. However, at the core of every single paper there is a nub of an idea, of a new concept, a new understanding or a technical achievement, and sometimes there are many of those in those papers. And what I like about these short stories, it's their way of attempting to tease out those nubs, and it does so across vastly different fields in these 33 stories.

What is the speaker's opinion about background reading?

Option 4: "It is essential to understand complex topics"

Explanation: This option is correct as the speaker explicitly states that a large amount of background reading is necessary to understand complex experiments described in scientific papers. This aligns with the overall theme of the text, which emphasizes the importance of understanding complex topics in science.

Option 1: "It is essential to complete the given assignments"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because the text does not mention assignments at all. The speaker focuses on the importance of background reading for understanding scientific papers, not for completing assignments.

Option 2: "It is essential to achieve the technical targets"

Explanation: This option is incorrect as the text does not discuss technical targets. The speaker emphasizes background reading as a means to understand complex scientific concepts rather than achieving specific technical goals.

Option 3: "It is essential to find nub of an idea"

Explanation: This option is incorrect because while the speaker mentions 'nubs' of ideas in scientific papers, they do not state that background reading is essential for finding these ideas. The focus is on understanding complex topics through background reading.
