Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #45662 Medium ACT
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
So luckily for me, I haven't taken standardized tests in a very long time, but I did have to take two major standardized tests when I was in high school. So I had to take the ACT and the SAT. And the ACT stands for American College Testing, and the SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, I believe. So I had to take both of these tests when I was in my third year of high school, when I was a junior in high school. And those were both tests that I needed to take to apply to different universities. So I do remember taking them and being stressed out about the whole experience, but luckily I did well enough on them that I was accepted into a couple of different universities. And I went on to go to university. So those are the tests that I had to take when I was in high school at least. And I'm happy I didn't have to take any more than those two.

Why did the speaker sit for the mentioned standardized tests?

Option 2: "Those tests were needed to apply to different universities."

Explanation: This option is correct as it directly reflects the speaker's statement in the text. The speaker mentions that the ACT and SAT were tests required for applying to different universities, which aligns perfectly with the main idea of the text.

Option 1: "She took the tests for the experience."

Explanation: This option suggests that the speaker took the tests merely for the experience, which is not supported by the text. The speaker explicitly states that the tests were necessary for applying to universities, indicating a specific purpose rather than just gaining experience.

Option 3: "It was a requirement for the third year of high school."

Explanation: This option incorrectly implies that taking the tests was a requirement solely based on being in the third year of high school. The text does not mention any such requirement; instead, it emphasizes that the tests were necessary for university applications.

Option 4: "They did not clear their high school."

Explanation: This option suggests a failure to complete high school, which contradicts the text. The speaker successfully took the tests and was accepted into universities, indicating that they did complete high school.
