Practice Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #4655 Medium Internship
Instructions ›
Listen to the recording and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
I decided to choose a graduate internship here at UPA because of its good reputation, and they've got the awards to prove it. I wanted to learn and show to future employers that I had the experience that they were looking for, and I thought that by coming here I would have an edge over other graduates. Competition for graduate business roles is tough, and this is especially so if you leave university with no practical work experience. But seven of the top ten jobs held by graduates working in the UK are related to business, sales and HR. London is considered to be a business hub—many companies have their headquarters there—but there are still plenty of other good opportunities around the country, and this one is no exception. On the downside, I had a really tough time trying to finance my first three weeks in the internship before getting the first pay cheque. Everybody had a different background, so, for some people money is not an issue. Speaking for myself, I had to take out a loan in order to make a down-payment for the first month's accommodation.

Option 2: "They are worthwhile because you become more employable."

Explanation: The speaker emphasizes the importance of gaining practical work experience to enhance employability, stating that internships provide an edge over other graduates. This aligns with the main idea that internships are valuable for future job prospects.

Option 1: "They are expensive as you have to move to a different city."

Explanation: While the speaker mentions the financial challenges of the internship, the main focus is not on the expense of moving but rather on the value of the experience gained. The statement is too narrow and does not capture the overall theme of the text.

Option 3: "The best ones are in London because the big companies are there."

Explanation: Although London is mentioned as a business hub, the speaker also notes that there are good opportunities outside of London. This option misrepresents the speaker's broader perspective on internships and their locations.

Option 4: "The experience you have is more important than what you earn."

Explanation: While the speaker discusses the importance of experience, this option oversimplifies the message by suggesting a direct comparison between experience and earnings. The speaker's focus is on the overall value of internships rather than a strict prioritization.
