Practice Reading: Multiple Choice, Single Answer ID: #34769 American traveler
Instructions ›
Read the text and answer the multiple-choice question by selecting the correct response. Only one response is correct.
In journeying through foreign lands, especially in the East, the English or American traveler is constantly amazed to observe upon what meagre diet the natives exist. Accustomed to meat at every meal, he sees thousands of people who eat meat perhaps not once a year; used to an abundance of vegetables and fruits of infinite variety, he encounters people who live on two or three vegetables and as many fruits.
In the mines of Hungary, the workers dine on two slices of brown bread and an apple; the Italians are content with a little oil and a handful of macaroni; the Chinese exist almost entirely on rice, and the Arabs will live for weeks on dried dates. The surprise is not so much that these people exist, but that they are healthy and strong.
Doubtless, most of this moderation is due to poverty, since all nationalities soon fall into our ways of eating when they come to these shores, but their self-control is nonetheless proof that much of what we eat is an unnecessary burden to our stomachs. The primary purpose of eating is to sustain life, not to please the taste buds. We need material to replenish the waste of tissue, material to make blood and bone and flesh, and that is all.

Option 2: "They do not have sufficient income to purchase enough food."

Explanation: This option is correct as the text states that much of the moderation in diet is due to poverty. It highlights that the natives in various countries eat less because they cannot afford more food, which directly supports the main idea presented in the text.

Option 1: "Peer pressure among friends and co-workers to be thin."

Explanation: This option suggests that social influences drive people to eat less, which is not supported by the text. The text focuses on the dietary habits of people in various countries due to their economic conditions rather than social pressures. Therefore, this option does not align with the main idea of the text.

Option 3: "They struggle with the fear of gaining weight."

Explanation: This option implies that fear of weight gain influences dietary habits, which is not mentioned in the text. The text emphasizes economic factors rather than psychological ones, making this option irrelevant to the context.

Option 4: "They have a busy lifestyle that gives them no time to eat."

Explanation: This option suggests that a busy lifestyle is the reason for reduced food intake. However, the text does not mention lifestyle factors as a cause for the limited diet; instead, it attributes it to poverty and dietary moderation, making this option incorrect.
