Our Art Specialists

A. 20th Century Design

With the advent of a young generation of designers in the decorative arts from the 1960's onwards, this trend to focus on visual communication and presentation in the decorative arts has led to some of the most striking results in furniture, ceramic and glass making. Our design specialist is an art historian and registered valuer. After working as a decorative arts specialist for Sotheby's for more than 10 years, he established himself as an independent consultant, valuer and broker within his field of expertise. Working for private collectors as well as museums, he has curated several exhibitions on design and is actively involved in scholarly research on this subject, resulting in various publications and lectures. Design has long been regarded as the 'future collecting field'. Our specialist says: the future is now!

B. Toys and Dolls

Our expert worked for Sotheby’s, in Sussex for 25 years where she catalogued and valued dolls, teddy bears and other childhood memorabilia. Passionate about her field of expertise, she has seen the market change over the last 30 years, where dolls and toys have become increasingly collectible by the widest possible variety of audience ranging from 1900’s Steiff teddy bears to the more recent Star Wars memorabilia.

C. Coins

Our coins expert has had an interest in this subject since childhood and from 1990 to 2005 worked as auctioneer and cataloguer for two of London's main numismatic auctioneers (Glendining's and Baldwin's). With his main speciality in commemorative coins, he has a deep knowledge of his subject and market and will be able to advise you on the value of your coins.

D. Arms, Armour & Militaria

We have two experts in this field. Our expert in Arms, Armour and Militaria was formerly Head of Sotheby's Worldwide Department of Arms, Armour and Militaria and assisted Sotheby's with sales in London, New York, Denmark, Zurich, Billingshurst and Hanover. The sale of works of art from the Royal House of Hanover included arms and armour which sold for £4,764,004 ($8,392,610) which continues to stand as a World Auction Record for an ancestral collection in this field. Now running his own business, he is an authority in the military collecting field. We also have a specialist in 20th century, mainly World War I and II, militaria which have become increasingly more collectable in recent years.

E. Medals

Our medal specialist commenced his career as a member of the Coin & Medal Department at Sotheby’s in 1980, cataloguing British & foreign orders, decorations & medals - a date that now makes him the longest-served auction specialist in this field. He was appointed an auctioneer in 1987, and later became head of a newly created department for medals & militaria. Reverting to a consultancy role in 1992, he moved to another well-known company in 1997 and thence to Dix Noonan Webb, in Mayfair, London, in 2002, an independent auction company that has achieved highest annual turnover in this field ever since 2000.

F. Jewellery

The jewellery auction market is a rather fluctuating one, and even though very strong sales can be achieved, it is one where deep knowledge is required to be able to tell what sells and doesn’t. Apart from the intrinsic market value of the diamonds and gold, the design and saleability is dependent on fashion and trendiness. Our Jewellery expert has worked for over 15 years at Sotheby’s London and will be able to give you the best advice and valuation of your items.

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'interest started very early in life' = 'since childhood'

Why this is correct: The answer is Coins. The passage clearly says the expert had an interest in this subject since childhood, which directly matches the idea that his interest started very early in life. This is a clear synonym match.

Passage Reference: Our coins expert has had an interest in this subject since childhood and from 1990 to 2005 worked as auctioneer and cataloguer for two of London's main numismatic auctioneers (Glendining's and Baldwin's). With his main speciality in commemorative coins, he has a deep knowledge of his subject and market and will be able to advise you on the value of your coins.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Toys and Dolls because it talks about childhood items. That is a Context shift trap because the passage discusses children's objects, not the expert's own childhood interest.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'interest in this subject since childhood' = Statement: 'interest started very early in life'

Tips: Look for time expressions like 'since childhood' or 'from an early age' when the question mentions early life.

Key Vocabulary:

  • childhood = early life
  • subject = field

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'organisations and individuals' = 'private collectors as well as museums'

Passage Reference: Working for private collectors as well as museums, he has curated several exhibitions on design and is actively involved in scholarly research on this subject, resulting in various publications and lectures.

Why this is correct: The answer is 20th Century Design. The passage states that the specialist works for private collectors and museums, which clearly covers both individuals and organisations.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose Jewellery because it mentions giving advice. That is a Partial truth trap because it does not mention working for both organisations and individuals.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'private collectors and museums' = Statement: 'organisations and individuals'

Tips: When you see two groups in the question, scan for 'as well as', 'both', or lists in the passage.

Key Vocabulary:

  • collectors = individuals
  • museums = organisations

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'hard to predict' = 'fluctuating' and 'dependent on fashion'

Passage Reference: The jewellery auction market is a rather fluctuating one, and even though very strong sales can be achieved, it is one where deep knowledge is required to be able to tell what sells and doesn't. Apart from the intrinsic market value of the diamonds and gold, the design and saleability is dependent on fashion and trendiness.

Why this is correct: The answer is Jewellery. The passage explains that the market is fluctuating and depends on fashion and trendiness, which makes prices difficult to predict.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Design because it mentions the future. That is a Paraphrase trap because future collecting does not mean unpredictable value.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'fluctuating' and 'dependent on fashion' = Statement: 'hard to predict'

Tips: Words like 'fluctuating' or 'depends on fashion' often signal uncertainty or unpredictability.

Key Vocabulary:

  • fluctuating = changing often
  • trendiness = fashion popularity

Question Focus: Direct statement - 'We have two experts in this field'

Passage Reference: We have two experts in this field.

Why this is correct: The answer is Arms, Armour & Militaria. The paragraph clearly says we have two experts in this field, showing that more than one specialist exists.

Common Mistake: Students sometimes choose Medals because it mentions departments. This is a Wrong section trap because it never says there is more than one specialist.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'two experts in this field' = Statement: 'more than one specialist'

Tips: Exact numbers like 'two experts' are strong clues in matching questions.

Key Vocabulary:

  • field = category
  • expert = specialist

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'record period of service' = 'longest-served auction specialist'

Passage Reference: a date that now makes him the longest-served auction specialist in this field.

Why this is correct: The answer is Medals. The passage explicitly says he is the longest-served auction specialist, which clearly indicates a record period of service.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Toys and Dolls because it mentions 25 years. That is a Comparison trap because long service is mentioned, but not a record.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'longest-served' = Statement: 'record period of service'

Tips: Be careful. Long experience is not the same as a record unless the passage clearly says it.

Key Vocabulary:

  • longest-served = with the most years
  • record = the longest ever

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'now his own boss' = 'now running his own business'

Passage Reference: Now running his own business, he is an authority in the military collecting field.

Why this is correct: The answer is Arms, Armour & Militaria. Saying he is running his own business clearly means he is now his own boss.

Common Mistake: Students may choose Design because it mentions being independent. This is a Paraphrase trap because it does not clearly state he runs his own business.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'running his own business' = Statement: 'now his own boss'

Tips: This option appears again later. Options CAN repeat in matching features.

Key Vocabulary:

  • own business = self-employed
  • boss = employer

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'witnessed changes' = 'has seen the market change'

Passage Reference: she has seen the market change over the last 30 years, where dolls and toys have become increasingly collectible by the widest possible variety of audience ranging from 1900's Steiff teddy bears to the more recent Star Wars memorabilia.

Why this is correct: The answer is Toys and Dolls. The passage clearly states she has seen the market change over the last 30 years, which matches the idea of witnessing significant changes.

Common Mistake: Some students choose Jewellery because it mentions fluctuation. That is a Time trap because it does not mention changes over a long time period.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'seen the market change over the last 30 years' = Statement: 'witnessed significant changes in the last three decades'

Tips: Always convert numbers. Three decades equals 30 years.

Key Vocabulary:

  • witnessed = seen
  • decades = periods of ten years
