This is the principle on which a freeze-drying machine is based. The material to be preserved is placed in a freeze-drying chamber which is connected to a freezing coil and refrigerator compressor. When the chamber is sealed the compressor lowers the temperature inside it. I he material is frozen solid, which separates the water from everything around it on a molecular level, even though the water is still present. Next, a vacuum pump forces air out of the chamber, lowering the atmospheric pressure below to 0.06 ATM. The heating units apply a small amount of heat to the shelves in the chamber, causing the ice to change phase. Since the pressure in the chamber is so low, the ice turns directly into water vapour, which leaves the freeze-drying chamber, and flows past the freezing coil. The water vapour condenses onto the freezing coil in the form of solid ice, in the same way that water condenses as frost on a cold day.

Question Focus: The diagram label points to the main container where the material is placed

Correct Answer: I

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the main sealed box where everything happens. The passage clearly says the material is placed in a freeze-drying chamber, so this label must be freeze drying chamber.

Passage Reference: The material to be preserved is placed in a freeze-drying chamber which is connected to a freezing coil and refrigerator compressor.

Common Mistake: Some students choose chamber because it looks similar. But the passage always uses the full name freeze-drying chamber, not a general chamber. This is a partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'placed in a freeze-drying chamber' = Diagram: 'main container'

Tips: Use the exact technical term from the passage, not a shorter or more general word.

Key Vocabulary:

  • preserved = kept safe
  • chamber = closed container

Question Focus: The diagram label points to the cooling system connected to the chamber

Correct Answer: E

Passage Reference: which is connected to a freezing coil and refrigerator compressor.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the cooling equipment next to the chamber. The passage explains that the chamber is connected to a refrigerator compressor, which is part of the refrigerator system. So the correct label here is refrigerator.

Common Mistake: Many students choose compressor because they see that word in the sentence. But the diagram label points to the whole cooling unit, not just one part. This is a context shift trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'connected to a refrigerator compressor' = Diagram: 'cooling unit'

Tips: Look carefully at what the arrow points to - a whole system or just one part.

Key Vocabulary:

  • connected = linked
  • compressor = pressure machine

Question Focus: The diagram label points to where water vapour turns back into ice

Correct Answer: A

Passage Reference: flows past the freezing coil. The water vapour condenses onto the freezing coil in the form of solid ice, in the same way that water condenses as frost on a cold day.

Why this is correct: The diagram shows the area where vapour changes back into ice. The passage says water vapour flows past the freezing coil and condenses onto the freezing coil, so the correct label is freezing coil.

Common Mistake: Some students choose condenses because that word appears in the same sentence. But the diagram needs a thing, not an action. This is a grammar trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'condenses onto the freezing coil' = Diagram: 'place where vapour freezes'

Tips: Check if the blank needs an object or an action word.

Key Vocabulary:

  • condenses = turns into liquid or solid
  • vapour = gas

Question Focus: The diagram label points to the flat surfaces inside the chamber

Correct Answer: F

Passage Reference: The heating units apply a small amount of heat to the shelves in the chamber, causing the ice to change phase.

Why this is correct: Inside the chamber, the material sits on flat platforms. The passage says heat is applied to the shelves in the chamber, so the correct label is shelves.

Common Mistake: Some students choose chamber again because it is inside the machine. But the arrow points to the platforms, not the walls. This is a wrong section trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'heat to the shelves' = Diagram: 'flat platforms inside'

Tips: Follow the process order - this sentence comes after freezing and vacuum steps.

Key Vocabulary:

  • apply = give
  • phase = state

General Tips:

  • Diagram labels usually follow the passage order from top to bottom.
  • Always check if the blank needs a machine, a part, or an action word.
  • Use the exact words from the passage whenever possible.
  • If two options look similar, re-read the sentence and match meaning, not shape.
