The diagram below shows how hydrogen can be made using simple laboratory equipment.
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.
Hydrogen can be made very easily by using simple laboratory equipment. All you need is a thistle funnel, cork, glass dish, graduated glass cylinder, test tube, glass pipe, zinc, tap water, and hydrochloric acid. To begin with, 5ml of tap water is put into a 50ml graduated glass cylinder with about 1gm of zinc. The top of the glass cylinder is fitted with a cork and a thistle funnel and a glass pipe inserted into it. The glass pipe connects the cylinder with a glass dish. Sufficient tap water is placed in the dish to cover the top of the pipe which is then covered with a water filled test tube. Before adding 5 ml of hydrochloric acid to the funnel it is important to make sure that the end of the funnel is below the tap water. Once added, the hydrochloric acid comes into contact with the tap water very quickly and an immediate chemical reaction can be seen. Hydrogen gas is released and starts to travel down the pipe into the test tube. The hydrogen displaces the water and produces a test tube of pure hydrogen gas. By adding baking soda to the cylinder the acid solution is neutralized and can be poured down the sink.

Question Focus: Diagram label for the liquid added through the funnel
Correct Answer: 5ml hydrochloric acid
Why this is correct: The diagram shows a liquid being poured into the funnel. The passage clearly says 5 ml of hydrochloric acid is added to the funnel, so this exact phrase labels that part of the diagram.
Passage Reference: Before adding 5 ml of hydrochloric acid to the funnel
Common Mistake: Students may write hydrochloric acid only, but the diagram label includes the amount. Leaving out 5ml is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'adding 5 ml of hydrochloric acid to the funnel' = Diagram: 'liquid added to funnel'
Tips: For diagram labels, always include numbers if the passage gives a specific amount.
Key Vocabulary:
- hydrochloric acid = a strong acid
- funnel = cone-shaped tool for pouring
Question Focus: Diagram label for the stopper at the top of the cylinder
Correct Answer: cork
Passage Reference: The top of the glass cylinder is fitted with a cork and a thistle funnel and a glass pipe inserted into it.
Why this is correct: The diagram points to the stopper sealing the top of the cylinder. The passage states it is fitted with a cork, so cork is the correct label.
Common Mistake: Students sometimes write lid or cover, but those words are not in the passage. This is a synonym trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'cork' = Diagram: 'stopper on top of cylinder'
Tips: In FIB questions, you must copy the exact word from the passage.
Key Vocabulary:
- cork = stopper
- fitted = put in place
Question Focus: Diagram label for the main container
Correct Answer: 50ml glass cylinder
Passage Reference: 5ml of tap water is put into a 50ml graduated glass cylinder with about 1gm of zinc.
Why this is correct: The diagram points to the main container holding water and zinc. The passage names this as a 50ml graduated glass cylinder, which matches the diagram.
Common Mistake: Students may write only glass cylinder, but the passage includes the size. Missing this detail is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: '50ml graduated glass cylinder' = Diagram: 'main container'
Tips: When equipment names include measurements, include them if they fit the word limit.
Key Vocabulary:
- graduated = marked with measurements
- cylinder = tube-shaped container
Question Focus: Diagram label for the solid metal inside the cylinder
Correct Answer: 1gm of zinc
Passage Reference: 5ml of tap water is put into a 50ml graduated glass cylinder with about 1gm of zinc.
Why this is correct: The diagram shows a solid at the bottom of the cylinder. The passage says there is 1gm of zinc, so that is the correct label.
Common Mistake: Students sometimes write zinc only, but the amount is shown in the diagram. This is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: '1gm of zinc' = Diagram: 'metal in cylinder'
Tips: If the diagram shows a measured amount, check the passage for the exact number.
Key Vocabulary:
- zinc = a metal element
- gm = gram
Question Focus: Diagram label for the funnel at the top
Correct Answer: thistle funnel
Passage Reference: All you need is a thistle funnel, cork, glass dish, graduated glass cylinder, test tube, glass pipe, zinc, tap water, and hydrochloric acid.
Why this is correct: The diagram shows a funnel-shaped tool at the top of the setup. The passage lists this as a thistle funnel, which is the exact equipment name.
Common Mistake: Writing just funnel is not enough because the passage specifies the type. This is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'thistle funnel' = Diagram: 'funnel at the top'
Tips: Always copy full equipment names, not shortened versions.
Key Vocabulary:
- thistle funnel = lab funnel with a long tube
Question Focus: Diagram label for the gas produced
Correct Answer: hydrogen gas
Passage Reference: Hydrogen gas is released and starts to travel down the pipe into the test tube.
Why this is correct: The diagram labels the gas moving through the pipe. The passage clearly states hydrogen gas is released, so this is the correct answer.
Common Mistake: Some students write hydrogen only, but the passage uses hydrogen gas. Shortening it is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'hydrogen gas' = Diagram: 'gas in pipe'
Tips: If the passage includes a scientific form like 'gas', include it.
Key Vocabulary:
- released = let out
- gas = state of matter
Question Focus: Diagram label for the container collecting gas
Correct Answer: test tube
Passage Reference: which is then covered with a water filled test tube.
Why this is correct: The diagram points to the upside-down container collecting gas. The passage says it is covered with a test tube, so that label is correct.
Common Mistake: Students may write glass tube, but that refers to a different part. This is a context shift trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'test tube' = Diagram: 'container for gas'
Tips: Be careful not to confuse similar-looking equipment names.
Key Vocabulary:
- covered = placed over
- collect = gather
Question Focus: Diagram label for the liquid in the dish
Correct Answer: tap water
Passage Reference: Sufficient tap water is placed in the dish to cover the top of the pipe
Why this is correct: The diagram shows liquid in the dish around the pipe. The passage says sufficient tap water is placed in the dish, so tap water is correct.
Common Mistake: Writing water only is too general. The passage specifies tap water, so missing this is a partial truth trap.
Paraphrasing: Passage: 'tap water' = Diagram: 'water in dish'
Tips: When a type of water is specified, copy it exactly.
Key Vocabulary:
- sufficient = enough
- dish = shallow container
General Tips:
- Diagram completion answers follow the passage order. Use earlier labels to help you locate later ones.
- Always copy the exact words from the passage. Do not invent synonyms.
- Check the word limit carefully. Extra words make the answer wrong.
- Look closely at the diagram to see if quantities or specific types are shown.
