IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS AT THE COMPUTER CENTRE

TYPING COURSE
The university offers an annual keyboard skills course for all new students during orientation week. The course is designed to teach touch typing to people at the beginner's level, though experienced typists wishing to improve their skills may also benefit from the program. The course is computer-based and draws on the latest findings in applied psychology to help you learn at your own pace. The method encourages the use of all ten fingers for maximum speed and accuracy and focuses on the need to establish good typing habits from the start.

The typing course is three courses in one. It teaches the alphabetic/numeric keyboard in eight structured lessons. Then the speed and accuracy lessons build your speed to whatever goals you choose. Finally, the program teaches the numeric keypad in three simple lessons, particularly useful for spreadsheet work and entering statistical data. Participants each work at their own computer and are free to undertake the course in whatever order they choose. A qualified teacher who is thoroughly familiar with the program will be available all times to explain the method and assist with any personal learning difficulties.

Question Focus: Checking if the passage says computer-based learning makes typing easier

Correct Answer: NOT GIVEN

Why this is correct: The passage tells us the course is computer-based and helps students learn at their own pace, but it never says that using a computer has made typing much easier. The idea of typing becoming easier is the student's interpretation, not stated in the text.

Passage Reference: The course is computer-based and draws on the latest findings in applied psychology to help you learn at your own pace.

Common Mistake: Students often choose TRUE because computer-based learning sounds positive. But the passage never compares difficulty before and after computers. This is a Not Given trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'computer-based' and 'learn at your own pace' = Statement: 'using a computer to learn has made typing much easier'

Tips: Do not add your own ideas like 'easier' or 'better' unless the passage clearly says this.

Key Vocabulary:

  • computer-based = done using computers
  • at your own pace = at a speed you choose

Question Focus: Synonym match - 'annual' means every year

Correct Answer: TRUE

Passage Reference: The university offers an annual keyboard skills course for all new students during orientation week.

Why this is correct: The key word is annual, which clearly means every year. This directly matches the statement.

Common Mistake: Some students hesitate because they expect to see the words 'every year'. But IELTS often uses synonyms. This is a Synonym match.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'annual' = Statement: 'every year'

Tips: Always check if one word in the passage is a synonym of the statement.

Key Vocabulary:

  • annual = every year
  • orientation week = first week at university

Question Focus: Checking if the passage says touch typing is essential for all university study

Correct Answer: NOT GIVEN

Passage Reference: The course is designed to teach touch typing to people at the beginner's level, though experienced typists wishing to improve their skills may also benefit from the program.

Why this is correct: The passage explains that the course teaches touch typing, but it never says touch typing is essential for university. The passage does not discuss whether all students must have this skill.

Common Mistake: Students often mark TRUE because touch typing sounds important. But importance is not the same as being essential. This is a Not Given trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'teach touch typing' = Statement: 'touch typing is an essential skill'

Tips: Ask yourself: does the passage say this is required, or just useful?

Key Vocabulary:

  • essential = absolutely necessary
  • benefit = get help or improvement

Question Focus: Understanding schedule information

Correct Answer: TRUE

Passage Reference: Monday evenings from 5.00-7.00pm

Why this is correct: The course is held on Monday evenings, which means it happens once each week. There is no mention of multiple days.

Common Mistake: Some students think the passage must say 'once a week' exactly. But the day given already shows the frequency. This is a Synonym match.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'Monday evenings' = Statement: 'once a week'

Tips: For time questions, a single named day usually means once a week.

Key Vocabulary:

  • evenings = nights
  • takes place = happens

Question Focus: Identifying costs mentioned in the passage

Correct Answer: FALSE

Passage Reference: Tuition is free but there is a nominal charge for the accompanying book which you will need to purchase. Classes are free but there is a nominal charge for the use of paper and disks.

Why this is correct: Both courses mention nominal charges, even though the classes are free. This directly contradicts the statement that there are no costs.

Common Mistake: Students see the word 'free' and stop reading. They miss the extra charges. This is a Contradiction trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'nominal charge' = Statement: 'no costs involved'

Tips: Always read past the word 'free' to check for hidden costs.

Key Vocabulary:

  • nominal charge = small cost
  • tuition = teaching fees

General Tips:

  • TFNG statements follow passage order, so use the previous answer to help you find the next one.
  • If the passage does not clearly say something is true or false, choose NOT GIVEN.
  • Look for small but important words like 'annual', 'essential', and 'no costs'.
  • Do not add your own opinions or real-world knowledge. Only use the passage.
