Newtown Council

Dear Householder,

Recycling in your area

Are you doing all you can to recycle your rubbish? It only takes a minute to recycle and help reduce domestic waste as well as the costs of waste management. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Town Clerk

A. Never throw away vegetable matter: start a compost bin in your garden or on your balcony. You'll be amazed how much this can reduce the bulk of your rubbish and it's great for the garden too.

B. Don't throw used containers in the rubbish. Get into the habit of sorting them into recycling categories: glass, aluminium, plastic and paper,

С. Glass containers can be placed in the bottle banks at supermarket car parks throughout the city. Look for the big green bags. Alternatively, leave your bottles out for collection on monday morning.

D. Aluminium cans can earn you cash so don't just throw them away - save them and save money. Ring your council to find out when they collect.

E. Paper is easily recycled. Weekly collections are common in most areas. Make sure you place the recyclable paper in the black bins provided. Ask at the council offices if you don't already have a bin. But remember, waxed paper is not accepted.

F. Most plastic bottles and containers can be recycled. Look at the bottom of the container for the identification code.

MORE RECYCLING TIPS

The Council now includes vinyl bottles in their kerbside collection scheme. Here are some facts about vinyl:

  • Vinyl (or PVC) is one of the three most commonly used plastics.
  • About 80 per cent of the 180,000 tonnes of vinyl currently used in this country each year goes into long-life applications such as pipe and cable.
  • About ten per cent is used in short-life products such as bottles and film wrap.
  • Clear vinyl bottles are used for liquids such as fruit juice, mineral water and cooking oil. Coloured vinyl is used for products such as detergents and cosmetics.
  • The identification code for vinyl is 13

Question Focus: Contradiction - checking if the passage limits what kind of paper is recyclable

Correct Answer: FALSE

Why this is correct: The statement says all paper can be recycled, but the passage clearly says waxed paper is not accepted. This directly contradicts the statement, so the answer is FALSE.

Passage Reference: E. Paper is easily recycled. Weekly collections are common in most areas. Make sure you place the recyclable paper in the black bins provided. Ask at the council offices if you don't already have a bin. But remember, waxed paper is not accepted.

Common Mistake: Students often choose TRUE because they see "Paper is easily recycled" and stop reading. But the last sentence adds an important exception. This is a Partial truth trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'waxed paper is not accepted' = Statement: 'all paper can be recycled'

Tips: Always read to the end of the paragraph because IELTS often puts exceptions in the final sentence.

Key Vocabulary:

  • accepted = allowed
  • waxed = covered with a thin layer

Question Focus: Checking for specific time information about paper collection

Correct Answer: NOT GIVEN

Passage Reference: E. Paper is easily recycled. Weekly collections are common in most areas. Make sure you place the recyclable paper in the black bins provided.

Why this is correct: The passage says paper is collected weekly, but it does not say which day. Monday is mentioned for glass bottles, not paper, so there is not enough information. The answer is NOT GIVEN.

Common Mistake: Students often choose FALSE because they see Monday mentioned elsewhere. But the passage does not say paper is collected on Monday or not. This is a Wrong section trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'weekly collections' = Statement: 'collect on Mondays'

Tips: Be careful when a day or number is added in the statement. If the passage does not confirm it, choose NOT GIVEN.

Key Vocabulary:

  • weekly = every week
  • collection = picking up waste

Question Focus: Location detail - where the identification code is found

Correct Answer: FALSE

Passage Reference: F. Most plastic bottles and containers can be recycled. Look at the bottom of the container for the identification code.

Why this is correct: The passage clearly says the code is on the bottom of the container, not the side. This is the opposite of the statement, so the answer is FALSE.

Common Mistake: Students may think the side and bottom are similar places and choose TRUE. But IELTS tests exact details. This is a Contradiction trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'bottom of the container' = Statement: 'side of plastic bottles'

Tips: For FALSE answers, always point to the exact word that shows the opposite meaning.

Key Vocabulary:

  • identification code = recycling number
  • container = bottle or package

Question Focus: Percentage comparison - main use versus smaller use

Correct Answer: FALSE

Passage Reference: About 80 per cent of the 180,000 tonnes of vinyl currently used in this country each year goes into long-life applications such as pipe and cable. About ten per cent is used in short-life products such as bottles and film wrap.

Why this is correct: The passage says 80 per cent of vinyl is used for pipes and cables, and only ten per cent is used for bottles. That means bottles are not the main use. The answer is FALSE.

Common Mistake: Students see bottles mentioned and assume they are important. But the percentages show the opposite. This is a Qualification trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'about ten per cent is used in bottles' = Statement: 'mostly used for making bottles'

Tips: When you see numbers or percentages, compare them carefully before deciding.

Key Vocabulary:

  • long-life = used for a long time
  • short-life = used for a short time

Question Focus: Matching product type with bottle colour

Correct Answer: FALSE

Passage Reference: Clear vinyl bottles are used for liquids such as fruit juice, mineral water and cooking oil. Coloured vinyl is used for products such as detergents and cosmetics.

Why this is correct: Detergents and cosmetics are non-drinkable liquids, and the passage says they use coloured vinyl. This actually matches the idea, but the passage says products, not specifically liquids only. Because the statement changes the meaning, the answer is FALSE.

Common Mistake: Students often choose TRUE because detergents are liquids. But the wording in the passage is broader and does not limit them to liquids. This is a Paraphrase trap.

Paraphrasing: Passage: 'products such as detergents and cosmetics' = Statement: 'non-drinkable liquids'

Tips: Do not change the category of words. Products is not always the same as liquids in IELTS.

Key Vocabulary:

  • detergents = cleaning liquids
  • cosmetics = beauty products

General Tips:

  • TFNG questions follow the order of the passage, so use the location of the previous answer to find the next one faster.
  • If the statement adds a detail like a day, place, or percentage, check if the passage really gives that exact detail.
  • FALSE means the passage says the opposite. NOT GIVEN means the passage does not answer the question at all.
  • Always watch out for words like all, mostly, only, or always. These often signal traps in TFNG questions.
