The  assignment  that  I'm  going  to  set  for  the  holiday  period  is  one  that  we've  given  students  for  a  number  of  years.  It's  quite    and  will  allow  you  to  get  out  and  about  -  it's  no  good  being  shut  up  in  your  rooms  all  the  time!  It  does  have  a  written  ,  too.  Um,  basically  it's  a  data  gathering  exercise  and  there  are  two  choices  with  regard  to  how  you    the  data.  We'll  go  through  those  in  a  moment.  I'm  also  going  to  give  you  a  link  to  an  internet  site  that  is  -  well  it's  critical  that  you    this  before  you  do  anything,  as  it  provides  a  lot  of  guidance  on  data  presentation,  both  in  terms  of  how  you  plot  it  -  its  diagrammatic  form  and  also  its  ,  which  has  to  be  clear.

Correct answer: practical

Explanation: Listen for "quite practical and will". It comes after "quite", so you need a describing word.

Meaning: "practical" means useful and for doing things.

Wrong options:

  • practicle: It leaves out the "a" and it adds an extra "e". Write "practical". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • practicality: "practicality" has an extra "ity" at the end. The speaker says "practical".
Correct answer: element

Explanation: On the recording you hear "written element, too." After "written" you need a word for a thing.

Meaning: "element" means a part or piece of something.

Wrong options:

  • ellement: It adds an extra "l". Check the letters: "element". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • elements: "elements" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "element", with no "s".
Correct answer: collect

Explanation: Listen again to "how you collect the data." After "you" the sentence needs an action word.

Meaning: "collect" means to gather the data together.

Wrong options:

  • collet: It leaves out the "c". The right spelling is "collect". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • collects: "collects" has an extra "s" at the end. The speaker says "collect", with no "s".
Correct answer: review

Explanation: Here you hear "critical that you review this before". After "you" the sentence needs an action word, it starts with re.

Meaning: "review" means look at something again carefully.

Wrong options:

  • revieu: It has "u" where the word has "w". Check the letters: "review". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • view: This is close but it does not carry the idea of checking again before you start.
Correct answer: description

Explanation: The speaker says "also its description, which has to". It comes after "its", so you need a word for a thing and it ends in tion.

Meaning: "description" means a clear account or explanation of something.

Wrong options:

  • descripton: It leaves out the "i". Write "description". Only the exact spelling gets the mark.
  • design: Design is a different idea about how something looks, not an explanation.
