Practice Listening: Fill in the Blanks (Type In) ID: #30254 Short Barred Owls
Instructions ›
You will hear a recording. Type the missing words in each blank.
* Fill in the missing words into the blank fields
Barred  owls  can  be  found  in  dense  forests  right  across  North  America.  They  feed  on  small  ,  fish,  birds  and  small  reptiles  -  pretty  much  anything  that  comes  their  way.  The  barred  owl  grows  up  to  half  a  metre  tall  and  has  emerged  as  a  very    nocturnal  predator.  Whereas  they  have  been  long-thought  to  live  in  old-growth  forests,  they  are  now  building  up  quite  an    population.  In  Charlotte,  North  Carolina,  barred  owls  tend  to  nest  in  the  cavities  of  the  numerous  willow  oak  trees  that  line  the  city's  streets.  Far  from  being  endangered,  the  owls  have  expanded  their  range;  and  now,  in  some  places,  conservationists  are  worried  about  the  effects  they  might  have  on  other    species.

Correct answer: mammals

Explanation: On the recording you hear "feed on small mammals, fish". It comes after "small", so you need a word for animals in more than one.

Meaning: "mammals" means animals like mice or rabbits.

Wrong options:

  • mamals: It leaves out the "m". Check the letters: "mammals". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
  • mammal: "mammal" has no "s" at the end. The speaker says "mammals", so write the "s".
Correct answer: adaptable

Explanation: Listen again to "has emerged as a very adaptable nocturnal predator". It is a describing word that ends in able.

Meaning: "adaptable" means able to live or change in new places.

Wrong options:

  • adaptible: It has "i" where the word has "a". The right spelling is "adaptable". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • adaptive: "adaptive" is a close word, but it ends in "ive". The speaker says "adaptable", which ends in "able".
Correct answer: urban

Explanation: Here you hear "building up quite an urban population". It comes before population, so the word means city related.

Meaning: "urban" means relating to cities or towns.

Wrong options:

  • urbun: It has "u" where the word has "a". The right spelling is "urban". Every letter must be correct to get the mark.
  • rural: This means countryside, the opposite of city.
Correct answer: native

Explanation: The speaker says "other native species". It comes before species, so you need a word for local kinds.

Meaning: "native" means originally from that place.

Wrong options:

  • naitve: Two letters are in the wrong order. Check the letters: "native". A small spelling mistake loses the mark.
